Background:

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) launched the Connecting to Collections<http://www.imls.gov/collections/> initiative to raise public awareness and inspire action to preserve America's cultural heritage record. The initiative is grounded in the results of A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America's Collections. All Connecting to Collections programs must address one of the four recommendations from the Heritage Health Index<http://heritagepreservation.org/hhi/> (HHI).

The Ohio Connecting to Collections<http://www.webjunction.org/documents/ohio/ctc-boot-camp/CTC-Bootcamp-Agenda-And-Application.html> project, begun in 2009, encourages partnerships and cooperation between Ohio's cultural heritage organizations to collaboratively develop a programmatic approach to help all types and sizes of institutions deal with their preservation concerns.

Preservation Boot Camp:

Both practical and tactical, the two-day Preservation Boot Camp<http://www.webjunction.org/partners/ohio/oh-programs/connectcollect/boot-camp.html> is a focused, educational event which will bring together teams comprised of museum/history staff and library staff. Sessions will address key preservation issues, including environmental controls, demonstrations for disaster recovery, collections care, and digital collection basics. Discussing local issues and sharing problem-solving ideas will help develop a core community to continue information sharing after the training. Attendees will be encouraged to provide outreach and information to other cultural organizations in their home areas, and they will have the opportunity to apply for one of eleven follow-up preservation site surveys. For additional information see a Draft Agenda<http://www.webjunction.org/documents/ohio/ctc-boot-camp/CTC-Bootcamp-Agenda-And-Application.html>.
