JOB DESCRIPTION
PURPOSE OF JOB:
This position serves to build the Local History and Genealogy programs by supporting staff in digitizing, creating metadata and processing of historical collections.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supports the library’s digitization efforts by creating descriptive information for digital images, scanning historical materials and editing images according to established standards.
2. Assists library staff in doing accurate, in-depth research on historical topics.
3. Assists with preservation efforts by maintaining Library collection by identifying and solving problems with Library materials; performing cleaning of Library materials; creating phase boxes for books, rehousing documents and placing photographs and slides into sleeves and creating finding aids for archival collections.
4. Utilizes computer applications and Library equipment, maintains current knowledge of system wide and location specific procedures, processes, policies and operations. Utilizes e-mail, voicemail and other Library technology to maintain open channels of communication.

Interaction with staff, customers, agencies or vendors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Associate’s degree or one to three years’ of formal training beyond high school.
2. Ability to express self effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
3. Ability to troubleshoot computer and office equipment.

HIGHLY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
1. Progress toward a degree in library science, history or related field.
2. Experience in museum or library science program with emphasis in archival work.
3. Knowledge of Internet and database services, and library digital software such as CONTENTdm or PastPerfect.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:
No direct reports.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Frequency of travel: Rare.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
May require driver’s license and personal vehicle. Periodic evening and weekend hours.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work requires physical effort in the repetitive handling of materials or boxes and tools or equipment of up to 30 pounds in non-strenuous work positions and/or continual standing or walking at least 60% of the time.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences or commercial vehicles (e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, and/or working in moderate outdoor weather conditions).

Flexible schedule between 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. weekdays and/or Saturday. Must be available to work 12-16 hours weekly. This is a temporary position scheduled to close 12/21/2013.
