Kayla, I hope that you might be able to attend the upcoming C2C workshop, " Sustainable Preservation Practices: A Partnership of Facilities and Collections Care Staff" as I know it will be covered there too. Additionally as part of the smaller regional meetings in November, "A Question of Balance: Collection Environment Basics: How to Maintain Your Collection and What to Do if Something Goes Wrong", those who register in the first 2 weeks (not yet open) are eligible for a drawing for a datalogger.

Sustainable Preservation Practices:
A Partnership of Facilities and Collections Care Staff

“An optimal preservation environment is one that achieves the best possible preservation of collections with the least possible consumption of energy, and is sustainable over time.”
“Optimal practices can yield a 10% to 30% reduction in energy costs using existing equipment without risk to long-term collection preservation.”

The Connecting to Collections partners are pleased to announce that registration is now open for Sustainable Preservation Practices: A Partnership of Facilities and Collections Care Staff.

Description: The goal of the workshop is to bring together facilities and collections care staff from cultural heritage organizations as a team, to assist them in understanding how they can work together to assure preservation quality and energy savings. Topics to be covered include the role of environment in deterioration, the factors that shape the storage environment, best practices for monitoring and data analysis, and energy saving opportunities. The program will also include time to talk with colleagues about their individual successes and solutions.

Primary speaker for the day is Jeremy Linden, Senior Preservation Environmental Specialist, Image Permanence Institute<https://www.imagepermanenceinstitute.org/>. Jeremy Linden joined IPI in January 2010 and is an internationally-recognized speaker on environmental control issues. He is primarily involved in the environmental management activities of IPI and works on issues of material preservation, mechanical system performance, energy-saving and sustainability. Miriam Nelson, Head of Preservation, Ohio University Libraries and Robin Krivesti, Facilities and Stacks Manager, Ohio University Libraries will provide an example of actual collaborative efforts between collections care and facilities staff. Talk tables at lunch will allow participants to discuss topics of particular interest or concerns.

Tuesday, October 21, 2014
9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
State Library of Ohio

Registration for the conference is free and lunch is covered by the Connecting to Collections grant. Because the goal of the workshop is to bring together facilities and collections care staff, each organization should have two registrations – one for a facilities representative and one for a collections care representative. Register here<https://library.ohio.gov/sustainable-preservation-practices-partnership-facilities-and-collections-care-staff>

Questions about the workshop should be sent to Missy Lodge, Associate State Librarian for Library Development, mlodge at library.ohio.gov<mailto:mlodge at library.ohio.gov>.

November 2014: Five Dates, Five Locations, Same Great Content

The Ohio Connecting to Collections partners, in collaboration with the Ohio Preservation Council (OPC) will be offering a series of no-cost regional meetings in November on basic collections care, environmental control and emergency response.

The morning session, a lecture format, will focus on environmental controls and monitoring. Each location will also feature an area speaker discussing a disaster which occurred at their institution and how they managed to recover.

In order to provide a data-driven and meaningful session on environmental controls, institutions from each location who register within the first two weeks will be entered into a drawing for a PEM2 datalogger which they will receive at their institution at least one month prior to the session. To be eligible for a datalogger, the institution must install the datalogger, collect institutional data and allow C2C presenters to use their data as part of the workshop presentation. Following the workshop, the institution will keep the datalogger. Five PEM2 dataloggers, one for each regional workshop, will be given away.

The afternoon portion is a hands-on session conducted by OPC. The session will focus on immediate response to minor water disasters, wet book and artifact recovery with minimal intervention, and resources for the next level of recovery.

Dates and locations:

November 5 Newark John & Christine Warner Library, OSU-Newark
November 7 Dayton South Patterson Building, University of Dayton
November 13 Perrysburg BGSU at Levis Commons
November 18 Akron Public Library of Akron & Summit Cty.
November 21 Athens Kennedy Museum of Art, Ohio University

Time: 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Regional Workshops are an extension of the one-day program, Sustainable Preservation Practices: A Partnership of Facilities and Collections Care Staff, with Jeremy Linden, Senior Preservation Environmental Specialist, Image Permanence Institution, to be held on October 21, 2014 at the State Library of Ohio. Registration for all events will open later this summer.

This project is funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Connecting to Collections grant awarded to the State Library of Ohio.

Good Afternoon,

This topic has been brought up before on the County Archivists and Records Managers Association (CARMA) list serv but I wasn't sure it had been asked here. What types of environmental controls are you using in your archives? Dehumidifiers etc.?

Thanks!

Kayla Harris
