Good Afternoon, Friends of the History Fund.  I have some cautiously optimistic, glass-half-full-and-empty news to share.  First, the glass-half-full part:  as of the end of April, tax check-off contributions to the Ohio Historical Society - contributions that make the History Fund grant program possible -  totaled $144,330, from 15,353 generous Ohioans.  That's an average donation of $9.40 per person.

The glass-half-empty part:  we still need to reach our state-mandated minimum of $150,000.  The state's deadline for doing so is December 31, 2014.  We have a little under 8 months to generate $5,670.  For that $5,670, the History Fund is depending on Ohio income tax returns yet to be processed and filers with extensions.  We're optimistic that we'll make it, but we're not there just yet.  (And if you know any Ohio tax filers with extensions, ask them to contribute!)

"Herds" of mastodons on Ohio's highways and byways mean grants for history, prehistory, and preservation in our state!  While sales of the plates don't count toward our $150,000 tax check-off goal, they will most certainly make more grants possible.

The History Fund grant application for 2014-'15 will be available around June 15 and will be posted at www.ohiohistory.org/historyfund<http://www.ohiohistory.org/historyfund>.
