[SOA] Ohio's First African American Graduates Publication Invite

*Call for Submissions:*



Jacqueline Johnson and Mellon Press invite original papers for a book
entitled: *Ohio’s First African American Graduates from Institutions of
Higher Learning*. Contributors are sought who are interested in sharing and
writing candidly about their college’s or their university’s experiences
upon having accepted African American students. This book is intended to be
a reference guide that will comprehensively serve as a part of Ohio’s
cultural landscape. This book will offer historical content that addresses
the shared experiences of these institutions as well as offer narratives
from the student’s point of view. The submissions should include well
documented historical information about their institutions such as the
institution’s founding, synoptic information pertaining to the first
African American students and images of the students.



Possible questions and perspectives to be considered:



·        When were the first African American students admitted to their
particular institution?

·        Where within the state were these institutions located?

·        Who made the decision and did it fit within the cultural milieu of
the institution and / or the school’s location?

·        Why did the individual student want to attend college?

·        What were their personal inspirations and aspirations?

·        What did they study?

·        What archival images and photographs are available for each of the
students?

·        What challenges did they face while matriculating if any?

·        What was their involvement in the school?

·        What was their field of study?

·        What degree did they attain?

·        What were the obstacles they endured?

·        What were the shared experiences of these students?

·        Who, if anyone, mentored the student while in school?

·        What did the students do following graduation?

·        What impact did their arrival and integration have on the specific
institution?

·        What positive aspects resulted, if any, from their education?

·        What impact, if any, did the following events make?

o   Ohio Black Laws of 1804

o   Oberlin College’s acceptance of African American Students in 1835

o   Civil War

o   Introduction of co-education in colleges and universities

o   Ohio Admixture Law of 1887

o   Beginning of Statewide Normal Schools due to the Lowry Act of 1910

o   Brown vs. Board of Education in 1956





*Timeline*



Please send 500-word abstracts and a brief CV with relevant publications by
October 15, 2014.

Notification of acceptance will be sent by November 15, 2014.

Accepted authors should submit articles for review by December 15, 2014.

Deadline for submission of final articles with revisions is February, 28,
2015.
