Good afternoon,

The SOA Advocacy & Outreach Committee would like to encourage all Ohio repositories to participate in MayDay on May 1, 2015. SAA has designated May 1st as MayDay, a day for archivists to take personal and professional responsibility for doing something small, but significant to protect their collections in the event of a disaster. SAA even provides a list of potential MayDay activities<http://www2.archivists.org/initiatives/mayday-saving-our-archives/ideas-for-mayday-activities> or you can come up with your own.

Is your repository prepared for a potential disaster? Use this opportunity to do something, no matter how simple, to protect your collections! When is the last time you had a fire drill, updated your staff emergency contact information or inventoried your emergency supply kit? Have you been putting off revising your Disaster Preparedness Plan? The time to complete these projects is before a disaster occurs!!

How will your institution recognize MayDay? Here in Greene County, we have invited our local firefighters to visit our repository on May 1st. This visit will give them an opportunity to familiarize themselves with our facility, the types of records that are in our collection, and consider how they could most effectively fight a fire at this location. We are also planning to go through our Disaster Kit and inventory our emergency supplies and make sure that we are prepared for a potential disaster. Remember, even a simple activity can have a significant impact on the response to a disaster.

The SOA Advocacy & Outreach Committee would like to know what your repository will be doing to recognize MayDay. Please send your planned activities to Robin Heise at rheise at co.greene.oh.us<mailto:rheise at co.greene.oh.us> by April 24, 2015. We plan on posting a blog post to the SOA website prior to May 1st and we'll be including all of the planned MayDay activities throughout the state.

Let's support SAA and show how important protecting our collections is to all of the repositories here in Ohio!
Thank you.
Robin
