Two years ago, a team from ICA - Art Conservation led by ICA Textile Conservator, Jane Hammond, spent the summer on a two-story scissor lift cleaning, treating, and preserving Lenore Tawney's "Cloud VI" textile sculpture in the lobby of the Frank J. Lausche State Office Building in downtown Cleveland.

As part of Octavofest, Northeast Ohio's annual celebration of Book and Paper Arts, ICA is offering a hands-on encapsulation workshop. Encapsulation is a simple and cost effective way to protect works on paper from wear and tear due to handling. It can also help keep fragile pieces together and make family documents accessible.

This workshop will teach participants how to encapsulate their own paper objects safely. Proper materials, environment and handling methods will be discussed. The end result will be a sample set of various encapsulation techniques for future reference. Materials list will be provided upon registration.

*Jamye Jamison is Paper Conservator at ICA - Art Conservation in Cleveland, OH. In 2003, after completing her graduate internship at the Newberry Library in Chicago, she received an MLIS with a concentration in book and paper conservation from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining the staff at the ICA in 2008, she was a paper conservator at Zukor Art Conservation, in Oakland, CA. Jamye is a professional associate and was the Book and Paper Group Program Chair for the 2012 American Institute for Conservation's (AIC) Annual Meeting after filling the role of Assistant Program Chair in 2011.

American Decorative Book Bindings & Open House

Join ICA as we celebrate Octavofest with an open house and display of American decorative book bindings. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, artists created elaborate and ornate trade bindings for American publishers. ICA will display approximately 50 of these beautiful books selected from a local private collection. Our conservation labs will be open, so visitors may ask questions of our conservators that evening.

Reservations are not required for this program.

Last year Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens began a $1M restoration of 15 spaces in the Manor House. Join Stan Hywet's Director of Museum Services & Curator, Julie Frey, and ICA's Assistant Objects Conservator, Claire Curran, for a presentation about a few of the restoration projects already completed, including the Goodyear Chest, an early example showcasing Charles Goodyear's vulcanized rubber paint.

As part of our ongoing public service, each year ICA selects one collecting institution to receive a free, 2-day collection survey. The goal of the program is to help the recipient institution identify its preservation needs and plan future conservation and stewardship initiatives. The information gained through the assessment helps the institution prioritize objectives and potentially raise funds to address those preservation needs.

Any non-profit organization with a public collection, which can demonstrate a commitment to preservation and collections care is eligible to apply for this survey. ICA will offer one collection survey focusing on a select group of artifacts within an institution. An ICA conservator will visit the recipient institution to examine the objects on-site for up to two days. Written condition reports and treatment recommendations will be provided after the visit. The selected institution only pays travel and accommodation expenses associated with the on-site survey.
