NCH Fights to Save Revolutionary War's Princeton Battlefield
NCH has joined the fight to halt destruction of a historically significant parcel of land associated with the Revolutionary War's Battle of Princeton.  In a letter to the Institute for Advanced Study's Board of Trustees, a national coalition of historical and conservation organizations have asked the Institute to halt development of land they own adjacent to the existing Princeton Battlefield park. NCH Supports Legislation to Make Congressional Research Service Reports Publicly Available
Bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the House and Senate that would require Congressional Research Service reports to be made freely available to the public on the Government Publishing Office's website.  NCH has joined a coalition of 40 groups in a statement supporting the legislation. Administration Submits FY'17 Budget Request to Congress
The Obama administration recently submitted its fiscal year (FY) 2017 budget request to Congress.  NCH has compiled a chart <http://historycoalition.us10.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=71100d6d7a&e=e51aad3b05> showing the budget requests for all federal agencies and programs affecting history, archives, and education.  The administration is proposing no major cuts and some increases for the programs affecting NCH's many constituencies. Urge the House to Fund K-12 History and Civics Education!
In December, President Obama signed into law a bill to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.  The "Every Student Succeeds Act"<http://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=5fab508eb0&e=e51aad3b05> restored funding for K-12 history and civics education.  Action is needed now to ensure these programs are funded in the FY '17 Budget. Declassified CIA and Henry Kissinger State Department Records
The CIA has released scanned copies of approximately 750,000 pages of declassified intelligence papers, records, research files, and other content.  Also released were scanned copies of approximately 40,000 pages of newly declassified records from the collection of former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's Government papers.

Rare Walt Whitman Letter, Written for a Dying Soldier, Found in National Archives
A National Archives volunteer recently discovered the letter when sorting through Civil War widows' pension files to be digitized at the National Archives in Washington. This Whitman "soldier letter" is only one of three known to exist.
