Dr. Carla Hayden Sworn in as Librarian of Congress
On July 13, the US Senate by a vote of 74-18 confirmed Carla D. Hayden as the 14th librarian of Congress and she was sworn into office on September 14. Hayden is the first woman, and the first African American, to lead the Library of Congress. She is also the first librarian to serve in the post in 60 years. Hayden is the first Librarian of Congress subject to a renewable 10-year term, which Congress imposed in 2015. Hayden most recently served as the chief executive of the Enoch Pratt Free Library system in Baltimore. She received a BA from Roosevelt University and her MA and PhD from Graduate Library School of the University of Chicago. Opening of National Museum of African American History and Culture
The National of Museum of African American History and Culture, the newest addition to the landscape of the National Mall and the Smithsonian Institution, officially opened to the public on September 24, 2016. The opening included a weekend of festivities to celebrate the museum. Entrance to the museum is free, but does require a timed-pass due to the large amount of people visiting in the first few months of opening. 100 Cities/100 Memorials Will Help Restore & Preserve WWI Memorials Across US
The U.S. World War I Centennial Commission is offering a new program in conjunction with the Pritzker Military Museum and Library. This program, titled “100 CITIES/100 MEMORIALS” allows individuals or groups to create a restoration or preservation plan for local historic sites and apply to receive matching funds to aid in the project. The program is described as a way for citizens to be involved in the national World War I Centennial. NPS Provides Historic Preservation Grants to Support American Indian Tribes
The National Park Service recently awarded over $500,000 in grants from the Historic Preservation Fund to support the preservation of American Indian tribal culture and history. Awarded to 16 different American Indian tribes, the funds may be used in a variety of ways, including exhibits, cultural education programs, and oral history projects. NPS Announces Availability of Grants to Assist in Preservation of WWII Japanese Confinement History
The Japanese American Confinement Sites Grant Program, established in 2006 by Congress, aims to provide funds to support the preservation of sites where over 100,000 Japanese Americans were interned during World War II. National Digital Newspaper Program to Now Include Newspapers from the Earliest Days of America's Founding
The Library of Congress program "Chronicling America" has gained four more participants through a grant awarded by the National Endowment for Humanities. These new states , Alaska, Colorado, New Jersey, and Maine will contribute early newspapers to the database and increase the number of participating states and territories to 43.
