As part of our ongoing public service, each year ICA selects one collecting institution to receive a free, 2-day collection survey.
The goal of the program is to help the recipient institution identify its preservation needs and plan future conservation and stewardship initiatives. The information gained through the assessment helps the institution prioritize objectives and potentially raise funds to address those preservation needs.

Any non-profit organization with a public collection, which can demonstrate a commitment to preservation and collections care is eligible to apply for this survey. ICA will offer one collection survey focusing on a select group of artifacts within an institution. An ICA conservator will visit the recipient institution to examine the objects on-site for up to two days. Written condition reports and treatment recommendations will be provided after the visit. The selected institution only pays travel and accommodation expenses associated with the on-site survey.

Albert Albano Awarded The Martha Joseph Prize

This year's 57th annual Cleveland Arts Prize Awards

On June 29th at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Albert was acknowledged for his long-standing career at ICA and his profound dedication to the preservation of our region's artistic and cultural heritage. The oldest award of its kind, Cleveland Arts Prize acknowledges excellence and accomplishments of artists and individuals working in the arts in Northeast Ohio. Cleveland Arts Prize supports, encourages, and promotes public awareness of artistic creativity through honorees, whose accomplishments have set a standard of excellence to which others can aspire.

New Disaster Preparedness Program for Performing Arts Institutions

The arts are always at great risk of loss from unanticipated disasters. Even a small chaotic event can impact operations and cause an interruption of performances in the community. The best way to recover from an unexpected event of any type is to plan in advance - to be in a state of readiness.

Each organization will receive a risk assessment, and help in developing an action plan with prioritized steps to respond to crisis situations while mitigating damage.

Former ICA intern Stephanie Petcavage returns as Program Associate/Circuit Rider

Once an intern at ICA in the Education department, Stephanie Petcavage has now joined our team as a grant-funded staff member. She came back to Cleveland after receiving her Masters in Art History at the University of Cincinnati and accepted a new position funded by a partner grant from the Mellon Foundation as Program Associate and Circuit Rider. Stephanie now heads a program facilitating disaster planning in Northeast Ohio for performing arts organizations through LYRASIS' Performing Arts Readiness initiative. ICA is excited to have Stephanie back.

The Peninsula Valley Historic & Education Foundation receives their "big check"

ICA and Ohio History Connection invite you to apply for the annual History Fund grant. The Ohio History Fund was created to support the preservation and sharing of Ohio's heritage by funding statewide projects, programs and events related to the state's history. This grant may provide funding for various historical projects such as: conservation of your collections, as well as museum collection storage, educational programs, exhibit development, and more.

The ICA offers free grant review of conservation-related applications, if you get a draft to us at least three weeks before the deadline. As part of our ongoing public service, each year ICA selects one
collecting institution to receive a free, 2-day collection survey.
The goal of the program is to help the recipient institution identify its preservation needs and plan future conservation and stewardship initiatives. The information gained through the assessment helps the institution prioritize objectives and potentially raise funds to address those preservation needs.

Any non-profit organization with a public collection, which can demonstrate a commitment to preservation and collections care is eligible to apply for this survey. ICA will offer one collection survey focusing on a select group of artifacts within an institution. An ICA conservator will visit the recipient institution to examine the objects on-site for up to two days. Written condition reports and treatment recommendations will be provided after the visit. The selected institution only pays travel and accommodation expenses associated with the on-site survey.

"Three Marys at the Tomb"

Nina Bongolan-Vedsted completed her internship in ICA's Paintings lab at the end of June. She assisted in the treatment of the only religious commission painting by Matthew Harris Jouett, The Dead Christ Mourned (Three Marys at the Tomb). With many canvas distortions and tears, Nina meticulously worked to restore this work of art to its former glory. This was a major project that involved the removal of previous canvas repairs, old varnish, fabric lining, fills and inpainting. Sometime during its life the canvas was attached to a smaller stretcher, but ICA returned the painting to its original size by mounting it on a new stretcher.

In a Sticky Spot with Katie Kontura
ICA pre-program intern, Katie Kontura spent the spring treating a camera case used by Sid Gillman, an American football player, coach, and innovator from the mid-20th century. Father of the modern-day forward pass, and other contemporary theories and tactics in football, Gillman was an innovator in the use of film and camera to capture the events during games and then analyze the film. In order to prepare the camera case for exhibition, ICA needed to remove residue left behind by deteriorated polymer foam. Katie's job was to spend her days scraping away the sticky residue, with the help of conservation solvents and implements, so the interior of the box would be clean and ready for interpretation in the Pro Football Hall of Fame's museum.
