Senate Committee Advances Museum and Library Authorization Bill

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee advanced S.3530, the Museum and Library Services Act of 2018, to the full Senate. Within this bill is authorization for IMLS, the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program, the 21st Century Museum Professional program, and expansion of the act to cover tribal jurisdictions. Re-authorization for the bill now extends to 2023, if passed and signed by the President. NCH Urges National Archives to Revisit Department of the Interior Records Schedule

The National Coalition for History joined 12 other open government and transparency groups<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=b8798ec1e2&e=994dc209a0> in questioning NARA's planned handling of certain records from the Department of the Interior. As part of NARA's request for comment on its planned records schedule for the Department of the Interior, the organizations together coordinated on a letter that summarizes the problem with the proposed process and urges NARA to reconsider. Congress Postpones Government Funding Vote Until Dec. 21

House Republicans have pushed back funding for the federal government once again to Dec. 21, pending passage of a funding extension by Dec. 7. Until a bill to fund them passes, inaction leaves numerous agencies and programs in an uncertain state, including the National Archives and National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Smithsonian Institution, and the National Park Service. Earlier this year, funding was provided for International Education and Foreign Language Studies, the Department of Education and Civics Academies and Grants, IMLS, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and the Library of Congress.

National Archives Works to Improve Access to Records with $3.5 Million in Grants

The National Archives has announced $3.5 million in grants to museums and institutions to aid the transfer of documents and records to digital formats. The purpose of the grant program is to help institutions increase public access to archives around the country. These grants are made through the NHPRC, the grant-making arm of NARA. Semiquincentennial Commission Meets to Plan Nation's 250th Birthday Celebrations

On Nov. 19, 2018, the Semiquincentennial Commission met to begin planning efforts for the 2026 celebration of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding. The 33-member bipartisan organization will meet to coordinate on a full program that tracks the history of the nation from 1776 to 2026 and beyond. IMLS Accepting Grant Applications for Small Library Programs

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) recently announced the opening of applications for a new round of grants for small libraries under the Accelerating Promising Practices program. These grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 are meant to foster best practices in three areas: transforming school library practice,community memory, and digital inclusion. The deadline to apply is Feb.25, 2019. National Humanities Alliance Advocacy Day Registration Opens
The National Humanities Alliance has opened registration for its annual Advocacy Day, to be held March 10-12 in Washington, D.C. This program will teach the fundamentals of advocating for more resources for the humanities in schools, the basics of approaching elected officials, and will culminate in Humanities Advocacy Day on March 12.
