Institute of Museum and Library Services Releases Grants and Other Funding

Over the past few months the Institute of Museum and Library Services has issued funding for mission-aligned programs around the country. 160 grants in early September<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=0b32d0218f&e=994dc209a0> provided funding for two types of museum programming, for example. The first, a grant titled “Museums for America,” focused on “projects that strengthen the ability of an individual museum to serve its public by providing high-quality, inclusive learning experiences by serving as community anchors,” according to a press release from IMLS. This grant was awarded to 133 projects. The second is a grant titled “Museums Empowered: Professional Development Opportunities for Museum Staff,” awarded to 27 institutions.

IMLS has also granted $5.1 million to 13 museums, each of whom will match an additional $2.3 million in funding, through its National Leadership Grants for Museums program. Under this program, eligible museums are those that meet certain needs for knowledge sharing in the field. In 2019, the eligibility will be further changed to include five categories: Collections Care and Public Access, Data, Analysis and Assessment, Digital Platforms and Applications, Diversity and Inclusion, and Professional Development. That round of funding is currently open<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=0a1fe855aa&e=994dc209a0>.

Finally, IMLS issued grants to 26 African American History and Culture Museums<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=8d25bc0bc1&e=994dc209a0> totaling $2.2 million. These grants were awarded to museums in 18 states.

In other news, IMLS announced a new study<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=ab3c3805c0&e=994dc209a0> to determine the impact of museums on their communities entitled Understanding the Social Wellbeing Impacts of the Nation’s Libraries and Museums. This study will focus on “10 dimensions of social wellbeing at the county level,” according to IMLS. This study is especially important in light of recent IMLS data showing that Americans visited public libraries more than 1 billion times in 2015.<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=3f4d709c3a&e=994dc209a0>

IMLS is also looking at ways to expand access, including growing the capacity of museums to reach more K-12 students through a new initiative<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=4e4a313fe4&e=994dc209a0>.
