Subject: [Ohlib] REALM Project Test 2 Results

Please excuse multiple postings...

Today, OCLC announced significant outcomes from the REALM Project Test 2, in partnership with IMLS and Battelle, and published the report, Test 2: Natural attenuation as a decontamination approach for SARS=CoV-2 on five paper based library and archives materials<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webjunction.org%2Fcontent%2Fdam%2FWebJunction%2FDocuments%2FwebJunction%2Frealm%2Ftest2-report.pdf&data=02%7C01%7Ccarleton%40ohio.edu%7Ca138e36ad4164c3164d608d82cec7c09%7Cf3308007477c4a70888934611817c55a%7C0%7C1%7C637308741500886570&sdata=BLB8H%2BJAczKeYst6kZB0Ds%2FoBTfhmfiYFqVOsfjfZI8%3D&reserved=0>.

For Test 2, the following library items were organized to mimic common storage conditions such as stacked or shelved books, or a pile of folders or magazines and placed within environmentally controlled chamber at approximately 72° and 42.8% relative humidity. The results of the testing include:

After 2 days:
Archival folders - SARS-CoV-2 virus was not detectable

After 4 days:
Braille pages - trace amounts of SARS-CoV-2 virus was not detectable
Glossy book pages - trace amounts of SARS-CoV-2 virus was not detectable
Board book- trace amounts of SARS-CoV-2 virus was not detectable

Magazine pages - trace amounts of SARS-CoV-2 virus was detectable (on only one of the five samples)

Day four was the final timepoint tested.

The results are encouraging and align with the commonly established practice of a 3-day quarantine on library materials. However, it is important to note that this was a highly controlled study and the temperature and humidity will most likely vary among libraries. Future tests will provide data on CD/DVD, Talking Book USB Cassettes, Acrylic (commonly used in displays), flexible plastic storage bags, and rigid plastic storage containers.
