The National Humanities Alliance is asking those who have connections with legislative staffers or legislators to contact them and ask them to sign-on to a letter of support for increased funding for the NEH and the NEA. The letters need to be signed by 5:00 pm today (May 6). If you have a connection to a legislative staffer (or better yet, a legislator), please consider contacting them using a modified version of the template(s) below.

Thank you and have a nice day,

Dear Advocates,

As you may have seen, the CARES Act included $75 million for the National Endowment for the Humanities to support educational and cultural institutions as they confront the COVID-19 crisis. Congress is now considering another round of relief funding, and Representative David Price (D-NC) and Representative Chellie Pingree (D-ME) are asking for sign-ons to a letter they are circulating requesting additional relief funding for the NEH and the NEA. Signatures are due today (May 6) at 5 pm.

I have pasted template messages below for outreach to House and Senate staffers. Please send messages to the House staffers you met with as soon as possible to encourage them to sign on to the Price/Pingree letter by COB today. Messages to Senate staffers are also helpful, but can be sent by the end of the week.

Please reach out with any questions.

Best,

Alex

Template message for Representatives

Dear __________,

I was so pleased to see relief funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities in the CARES Act. Unfortunately, the funding will cover only a fraction of the needed assistance. I am writing now in the hope that [Representative __________] will sign the letter that Reps. Chellie Pingree and David Price are circulating asking for additional relief funding for the NEH. Signatures are due by COB, today, May 6th. You can click here<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fforms%2Fd%2Fe%2F1FAIpQLSfqkdW-855RQu9tXExouqpXdRTe18-LPjJfFiTEd14g4UtalA%2Fviewform&data=02%7C01%7Ccarleton%40ohio.edu%7C0e66c22cd12649cf578908d7f1c77de1%7Cf3308007477c4a70888934611817c55a%7C0%7C0%7C637243711429747603&sdata=OfRK1L63%2FychQZAEhDCsbXTG7Mc9CnC06NBSCjIk8ZA%3D&reserved=0> to sign on.

Humanities organizations and educators are serving communities in crucial and unique ways, yet we are under immense financial pressures and need support from the NEH to ensure continuity of employment and services.

Optional personalized content:

  * How your organization is connecting people or helping them in other ways during the crisis

  * The financial challenges you are facing or those you see in the sector

For additional context, the National Humanities Alliance's statement on the need for additional funding can be found here<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nhalliance.org%2Fcovid19_relief_statement&data=02%7C01%7Ccarleton%40ohio.edu%7C0e66c22cd12649cf578908d7f1c77de1%7Cf3308007477c4a70888934611817c55a%7C0%7C0%7C637243711429747603&sdata=SxaJ118KH8hIII75ZmgqgnygC5Rgq1ok1EFboO8QEZc%3D&reserved=0>. I would be more than happy to answer any additional questions or set up a time to speak. Thank you for all your hard work to address this crisis. Again, we very much appreciate the support you've provided to this point and look forward to learning about the next relief bill.

All the best,
