TITLE: Reparative Description: Where We are and Where We're Going

ABOUT: Join us for a discussion with 3 speakers sharing how their institutions are discussing/implementing Reparative Description with their cultural heritage collections, particularly as it pertains to digital collections (but we recognize the work is needed across collections/formats). We are all at different stages on this very important work!

SPEAKERS/PROGRAM
- Implementing Sensitive Content Labeling Practices in Digital Collections.
Alia Wegner, Digital Collections Librarian, Walter Havighurst Special Collections & University Archives, Miami University.
As a form of visual communication, digital collections can exclude, silence, and harm marginalized people through the description and content of digitized materials. While reparative description is an important tool to ameliorate harmful effects in metadata, digital collections librarians must also explore ways to minimize harm in legacy collections that contain racist, culturally insensitive, and disturbing imagery. This presentation will discuss a pilot program at the Miami University Digital Collections to substitute sensitive content label thumbnails in the browsing display for materials that contain graphically racist, violent, and culturally insensitive content. The pilot began in 2019, as part of a reparative description project to incorporate anti-racist description in the Shields Trade Card Collection, but was expanded to other digital collections after an inventory of harmful content revealed a range of disturbing and graphic images. The sensitive content labels adopt an “opt-in” approach for students and researchers to view harmful content that appears in their search results. Participants will learn how to implement sensitive content labeling practices at their institution and how to create selection criteria to identify harmful imagery in their legacy collections.

- Working Towards Reparative Description Practices @ Ohio University Libraries.
Miriam Nelson, Director of Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections, Preservation, and Digital Initiatives, Ohio University Libraries.
Ohio University Libraries has been engaged in planning for implementing reparative description practices. Efforts include adding a reading and discussion to each unit meeting, drafting policies and statements for harmful language and related topics, and developing workflows.

- Who Controls the Vocabulary?: Reviewing and Implementing Community Based LGBTQ+ Descriptive Terms.
Karen Robertson, Curator of Manuscripts, Cultural Resources, Ohio History Connection.
This presentation will focus mainly on telling the story of what has happened at OHC in regards to implementing new LGBTQ vocabularies. The presentation will focus on our work flow, including strategies that have been both successful and unsuccessful.
