Dear Colleagues,

I want to make you aware of an incredible research project about Ohio women
daguerreotypists being undertaken by Kim Beil of Stanford University.

Please see below for further information and reach out to Professor Beil
directly if your institution may have work by women daguerreotypists.

Recent research has revealed that the highest concentration of women
photographers during the Daguerreian era (1840-1860) was in the Midwest.
Ohio lead the region with 57 women photographers, second only to New York’s
66. These facts about the geographic and gender distribution of
photographers during the Daguerreian era have long been left out of major
national histories of the medium.

We’re now trying to identify as many collections of photographs made
between 1840-1860 in local museums and historical societies as possible.
We’re especially interested in collections that are either uncatalogued or
undigitized, because these may have escaped the attention of prior
researchers and may help us to identify new examples of work made by Ohio
women photographers or even add new names to the list.

If you have information about uncatalogued or undigitized early photograph
collections in Ohio, please email kbeil at stanford.edu
