Dear Archivists,
Your institution may have hidden treasures that researchers could discover on Manuscript Cookbooks Survey<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.manuscriptcookbookssurvey.org%2F&data=05%7C01%7Ccarleton%40ohio.edu%7Ce71a22449bf84290f23b08daa3049a25%7Cf3308007477c4a70888934611817c55a%7C0%7C0%7C638001537402277021%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=DNXtOFAca4G1bErdroTsMB7gQiYyxwngp3Ii11Cl%2F1s%3D&reserved=0>. For the past ten years, this foundation-supported digital humanities project has been compiling a descriptive database of English-language manuscript cookbooks begun by 1865 that are held in U.S. repositories. The database currently includes 77 institutions with 822 manuscripts. We believe that we have surveyed many of the major collections at this point. But we know that we are still missing many smaller collections held by libraries, historical associations, and historic sites, which may not have cataloged their materials or may not have put their catalogs online. If your institution possesses pre-1865 English-language manuscript cookbooks or other handwritten pre-1865 books containing a sizeable selection of culinary recipes, we invite you to report these books to us so that we can include them in our database. Even if your institution has only a single such book, please tell us about it. (We will send you a worksheet, organized in MARC format, that details the information we need in order to enter a book in our database.) We also invite you to take a look at our site's database as well as its longform blog and other features, which may be helpful to you in assessing the origin (American, English, or other Anglophone country) and approximate date of your materials.
