Preservation/Conservation Grant recipients: Elizabeth Williams-Clymer,
Beverly Lane, and Kieth A. Peppers.
*Elizabeth Williams-Clymer:*
Elizabeth Williams-Clymer has been the Special Collections Librarian at
Kenyon College for nearly 10 years.
Project: The Keyon Reveille
"For this year's LSTA conservation/preservation grant, Kenyon selected the
earliest editions of their yearbook. 24 editions ranging from 1855-1867
(multiple copies of some issues) were treated, sleeved and rehoused in an
archival box for safe storage"
*Beverly Lane:*
Beverly Lane is the Director of Library Services at the Pontifical College
Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to assuming the role of Director in
2001, she served as the Assistant Librarian since 1990. She received an MLS
from Kent State University in 1988.
Project: Sketchbooks of Francis A. Ludewig
For the LSTA Conservation/Preservation Grant, the Josephinum Library
selected two sketchbooks containing drawings by Francis A. Ludewig,
architect of the Pontifical College Josephinum. The sketchbooks are
one-of-a kind works and include drawings from Ludewig’s architectural
career, spanning from his time as architecture student in Holland, under
the guidance of his teacher, as well as drawings from his retirement years.
Born in Holland in 1863, Francis A. Ludewig became a successful architect,
designing residences, churches, and restoring historic buildings. Upon
immigrating to the United States in 1912, he focused his career on church
architecture. The Josephinum 1931 building was referred to as “the finest
building Ludewig ever designed” (Bulletin of the Catholic Record Society,
v. 5, no. 5, May 1979, p. 413).
Kathy Lechuga, of Signature Conservation in Indianapolis, Indiana performed
the conservation treatment on the sketchbooks.
*Kieth A. Peppers*
Kieth A. Peppers has been with Baldwin Wallace University for six years.
Among his many responsibilities are being the university archivist,
athletic archivist, university historian, curator, and public history
professor. As is the case with many other archivists, Kieth is an army of
one, though he receives invaluable assistance from his student archival
assistants. Mr. Peppers also holds a position on the Cuyahoga County
Archival Advisory Commission, the SOA event planning committee, and the
Cleveland Archival Roundtable steering committee.
Project: Conservation of College Newspapers
As funded through the LSTA grant, the project involved conservation work on
our institution's oldest copies of our college newspapers. Our student
newspapers are our most heavily used collection currently accessible
online. The newspapers chosen for this project date from the 1850s through
the 1890s, many existing as lone copies. Lone copies were treated, washed,
encapsulated, and stabilized with Japanese paper when necessary. If
multiple copies existed, the conservator assessed the lot and selected the
best iteration for conservation.
