Archives Associate 2 (Reference Services Manager)
The University of Akron Archives and Special Collections
Archives and Special Collections of University Libraries at The University of Akron seeks to fill the position of Archives Associate 2 (Reference Services Manager). The Archives Associate reports to and works under the direction of the University Archivist & Head of Archives and Special Collections and in collaboration with other office staff. The Archives Associate coordinates the daily operations of the reference desk and reference services in Archives and Special Collections and assists patrons in researching and retrieving archival records.
Duties: Answers reference inquiries from patrons including students, staff, faculty, and the public and provides professional research assistance in-person and remote via mail, fax, e-mail, and website forms. Fields reference requests and assigns to other staff as appropriate. Monitors reading rooms and ensures security of collections and facility. Pages materials, registers patrons, and enforces access policies and procedures. Collects, tabulates, and maintains annual use statistics. Promote collections through website and social media outlets. Assists in training staff, student assistants, and interns/practicum students in relation to reference and research services. Photocopies and digitizes materials in various formats as requested by patrons, in accordance with applicable laws and policies, and facilitates delivery. Invoices patrons for services rendered and collects and deposits payments. Works with processing archivists to revise and/or update finding aids to facilitate access. Manages rights and licensing for use of materials from the Archives. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Relevant bachelor’s degree. Two (2) years’ experience in reference services, preferably in an archival setting. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Excellent and efficient time management skills. Excellent customer service experience. Computer proficiency including familiarity with standard Microsoft software applications, online catalogs, and bibliographic utilities. Familiarity with basic scanning equipment and software. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong attention to detail and proficient organizational skills. Ability to stand/walk on rough surfaces for long periods, bend and/or stoop, and lift heavy items up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in history, English, or related discipline, with relevant coursework in archival science, or ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS, with archives concentration. Experience providing reference services in an academic library or archives setting. Certified Archivist designation. Experience in working effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Demonstrated knowledge of current archival theory, practice, and standards. Knowledge of national, state, local, and university history.

Compensation: $18.21-$19.23 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. We offer a competitive and comprehensive benefits package.
