Archives and Special Collections of University Libraries at The University of Akron seeks to fill the position of Archives Associate 1 (Assistant Processing Archivist). The Archives Associate 1 reports to and works under the direction of the University Archivist & Head of Archives and Special Collections and in collaboration with other office staff. The Archives Associate 1 processes (arranges and describes) and preserves archival and manuscript collections applying current archival standards and best practices.
Duties: Reporting to the University Archivist & Head of Archives and Special Collections, and in collaboration with the Sr. Archives Associate, processes (arranges and describes) archival and manuscript collections applying current archival standards and best practices. Preserves archival and manuscript collections including re-housing materials into archival enclosures, humidifying/flattening documents, preservation photocopying, interleaving, etc. Follows and implements department’s standard policies and procedures. Digitizes archival and manuscript materials in various formats. Creates archival processing plans. Creates EAD-encoded, DACs-compliant finding aids. Identifies and refers materials for conservation. Creates metadata for archival materials and uploads to digital repository. Files additions to collections and maintains processed collections. Inventories new acquisitions. Appraises materials and recommends appropriate disposition. Assists with accessioning new acquisitions. Helps maintain stack areas. Assists with reference inquiries and research requests and provides reference services when required. Hires, trains, and supervises student assistants. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Relevant bachelor’s degree. Two (2) years’ experience processing materials in an archives or specials collections setting, preferably performing processing and preservation of archival and manuscript collections. Knowledge of archival methodology including appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Excellent and efficient time management skills. Trustworthiness and firm commitment to maintaining privacy and confidentiality. Computer proficiency including familiarity with standard Microsoft software applications, online catalogs, and bibliographic utilities. Familiarity with basic scanning equipment and software. Familiarity with basic preservation and conservation standards. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong attention to detail and proficient organizational skills. Ability to stand/walk on rough surfaces for long periods, bend and/or stoop, and lift heavy items up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in history, English, or related discipline, with relevant coursework in archival science, or ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS, with archives concentration. Certified Archivist designation. Experience with multiple formats, including textual, visual, audio, both analog and digital. Familiarity with DACS and EAD. Demonstrated knowledge of current archival theory, practice, and standards. Experience processing large archival collections. Experience or knowledge of Collections Management Systems and Digital Asset Management Systems. Cataloging experience.
