Please join the Ohio Digitization Interest Group for our summer in-person road trip meeting at 10 AM on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology in Akron.
Registration: Open until Thursday, July 10, 5pm, or until room capacity is reached. Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfEwoeEvHx-KqdpzbbFPmYUqiY9WBaiF5cfrVMLEzOFdsOlhQ/viewform?usp=dialog

Topic: From Tape (and other formats) to Terabyte: Audio/Video Digitization

Join us as we take a look at the wide, and often times wild, world of Audio/Video digitization. Presenters will share their experiences and expertise related to digitizing a variety of AV materials, from the more common to the truly unique. Presentations will cover best practices when digitizing AV, equipment used, and lessons learned.

Includes tours of the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology<https://www.uakron.edu/chp/>, both behind the scenes and museum galleries, as well as potential for local repository tours (we're capturing expressions of interest in the registration form).

Speakers:

- Man on a Wire: Digitizing a Long Obsolete Format. Jon Endres, specialist, Media and Technology, Cummings Center for the History of Psychology<https://www.uakron.edu/chp/>. In July 1946, Dr. David P. Boder arrived in Paris to begin collecting what would be the first large-scale interviews with displaced peoples and Holocaust survivors across Europe. He recorded these to the now obsolete media format of metal wire. This is how we recovered the recordings.

- Degralescence: Dealing with the Magnetic Media Crisis. Tim Lanza, lead, Audiovisual Preservation & Digitization; Sarah Hartzell, specialist, Audiovisual Preservation & Digitization; Amy McCory, associate director, Digitization Technology & Digital Programs Division<https://library.osu.edu/divisions/technology-and-digital-programs>, The Ohio State University Libraries<https://library.osu.edu/>. "Degralescence" describes the crisis facing the preservation of and access to content held on magnetic media carriers due to the twin threat of the physical degradation of magnetic tape and the growing obsolescence of playback equipment, along with parts and techs to keep these decks working. We hope to provide an overview of the issues, along with some solutions and resources.

- Working with Unique Audio-Visual Formats in the Collections at ASCPL. Mary Plazo, division manager, Special Collections<https://www.akronlibrary.org/locations/main-library/special-collections>, Akron-Summit County Public Library<https://www.akronlibrary.org/>. Special Collections works with local vendors on a regular basis to digitally transfer unique AV formats in our collections. One format in particular, a collection of large transcription discs, proved to be one of our most interesting experiences finding a vendor and sharing these historic recordings on our Summit Memory website<https://www.summitmemory.org/>.
