Kia ora iPRES Enthusiasts!

June is here, marking the start of winter in Aotearoa New Zealand. As the days grow shorter and colder, we also welcome the rising of Matariki<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.matariki.com/about__;!!KGKeukY!1VYXtuWJ9_sxJ5eYoBNHqgAtsCocWwkAT3MgDbOa4Ls6S-OyHrG2HPJj3VVpUh1gOQ1dNQEuqphwXA8-N7RwghVm0c0m$>.

Matariki is the Māori name for a cluster of stars known by many names around the world - the Pleiades/Seven Sisters/Subaru/Messier 45, just to name a few. The stars of Matariki disappear from view over summer in Aotearoa, and then reappear with the first new moon of Pipiri (June). The return of Matariki in the sky before dawn is a marker of the Māori New Year, and a time for remembrance, celebrating the present, and looking to the future.

Puanga is the Māori name for the star Rigel, part of the Orion constellation. Many iwi (tribes) on the western coast of Aotearoa where maunga (mountains) prevent the view of Matariki in the eastern skies use Puanga as a guide for the changing seasons.

Since 2022, the Matariki period is marked by an official public holiday here in Aotearoa<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.newzealand.com/nz/matariki/__;!!KGKeukY!1VYXtuWJ9_sxJ5eYoBNHqgAtsCocWwkAT3MgDbOa4Ls6S-OyHrG2HPJj3VVpUh1gOQ1dNQEuqphwXA8-N7Rwgr7WudmY$>. This year it is being celebrated on Friday 20 June. This year’s theme of ‘Matariki mā Puanga’ is all about inclusion, embracing diversity, and celebrating Matariki together. Matariki is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what truly matters.

From all of us on the Wellington Local Organising Committee, Mānawatia a Matariki! (Celebrate Matariki)

Update from Programme Committee

It’s been a busy time for the iPRES Programme Committee! We’d like to thank everyone who participated in the Call for Contributions, and also to our team of peer-reviewers for their time and considered feedback. We want to give a special thanks to everyone who volunteered to complete extra reviews in the last week so that we could meet our deadline.

We are currently working to build the initial programme, and plan to release a draft later this month. We will be sending out questions shortly to all authors of accepted full papers, short papers, panels, posters, workshops and tutorials, to gather presentation requirements. Be on the lookout for an email with a link to a presenter questions form this month.

The Ad hoc Call for Contributions will be opening soon - read on for more information about how you can participate!

Call for Ad Hoc Contributions opening 19 June

Have an idea for a great lightning talk or want to host discussion sessions with other iPRES attendees on a particular topic? Then the Ad Hoc Call for Contributions is for you!

Ad Hoc Contribution Types include:

  * Lightning Talks: Lightning talks present a brief presentation on a topic, recent developments, or a specific theme. These can be presented in person or as a recording for virtual attendees.

  * Birds of a Feather (BoF) discussion sessions: BoF sessions provide a place for attendees to gather informally with others who are interested in a particular topic. These can be held in-person or as virtual discussion sessions.

  * Games: This in-person category includes any form of board, video, or other game format broadly defined that addresses, illustrates, amplifies, or explores an aspect of digital preservation.

  * Other informal submission ideas: Have an idea for a format that’s not listed here? Let us know!

Ad hoc session proposals are due 18 July 2025, End of Day, Anywhere on Earth. Ad hoc session proposals are assessed in a light-weight process by the Programme Committee Chairs. They are not peer-reviewed. More information on the ad hoc Call for Contributions is available on the conference website<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.ipres2025.nz/post/ad-hoc-submissions-what-you-need-to-know__;!!KGKeukY!1VYXtuWJ9_sxJ5eYoBNHqgAtsCocWwkAT3MgDbOa4Ls6S-OyHrG2HPJj3VVpUh1gOQ1dNQEuqphwXA8-N7Rwgg_A7hGM$>.

Accepted presenters must register to attend iPRES 2025 either in-person or as a virtual attendee.

Environmental Sustainability at iPRES 2025

There’s no denying it - holding events like iPRES does have an environmental footprint, especially when they involve long air travel. But we firmly believe there are strong benefits to coming together in-person, and engaging with different cultures and ways of thinking.

iPRES 2025 in Wellington aims to incorporate sustainability practices and indigenous knowledge and wisdom into the conference itself. We care deeply for Te Taiao, our environment, and recognise the interconnectedness of our actions with the world around us.

We encourage attendees to make choices to help mitigate potential environmental impacts from their travel and/or virtual attendance at iPRES. Attendees can also make a carbon offset donation as part of the registration process to support a variety of climate positive projects. Learn more about how we’re looking out for the environment and things you can do as a conference delegate to reduce your carbon footprint. <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.ipres2025.nz/sustainability__;!!KGKeukY!1VYXtuWJ9_sxJ5eYoBNHqgAtsCocWwkAT3MgDbOa4Ls6S-OyHrG2HPJj3VVpUh1gOQ1dNQEuqphwXA8-N7RwgjsuQnP0$>

The Local Organising Committee is currently working with partners to develop kindred and co-located events here in Wellington to maximise connection and learning for in-person attendance at iPRES 2025. Stay tuned for updates about other events happening around iPRES in Wellington.
