Kia ora iPRES Enthusiasts!

Message from the Conference Chairs

May is upon us, and there’s lots going on behind the scenes for the iPRES 2025 Organising Team!

First off, thank you so much to everyone who put in proposals for the first Call for Contributions - we were blown away by the volume and quality of the submissions!

Secondly, a massive thank you to our team of reviewers! Your thoughtful feedback helps maintain the quality of the conference and supports the growth of our community. The Programme Committee is deeply grateful to our reviewers for taking the time to consider and evaluate the submissions, and share their insights.

Reviews Underway

So you’ve submitted your proposal - what happens next?

The review process is now in progress, and you will be notified of the outcome starting from 3 June 2025. There are three possible results: your submission may be accepted as proposed, accepted with revisions, or not accepted. If your submission is not accepted, you might consider adapting your idea into a different format, such as a lightning talk, for the ad-hoc call for submissions opening on 19 June.

Nominate a Keynote Speaker

iPRES 2025 belongs to all of us, so we want your help in making the conference as interesting and relevant as possible. We’re asking the community for suggestions for our three keynote speakers. If you have someone in mind, please let us know by filling out this form. <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe7W8xphH0DWWf_BccWK6WbO1v2Tou6i_ZxLq6lLJbG0ZQ2pQ/viewform__;!!KGKeukY!0wHUIPkanv5a0QFyCeKQ7KwMNuMrwvuaF6vUjBi1JVQFlywMBje0uAwfw36RxcQamZ-1tKVEVN5Qi6tXPemLdb044ioL$>

We’re looking for speakers who can inspire, challenge, and engage our community—people who bring fresh perspectives and can speak meaningfully to digital preservation and its intersections, including digital curation, digital humanities, data stewardship, and more.

We're particularly interested in speakers who are engaging communicators, actively involved in current work, offer future-oriented insights, and reflect a diversity of perspectives, disciplines, cultures, and experiences—including Indigenous, regional, and early-career voices. Each keynote will align with one of the 2025 conference themes<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.ipres2025.nz/conference-themes__;!!KGKeukY!0wHUIPkanv5a0QFyCeKQ7KwMNuMrwvuaF6vUjBi1JVQFlywMBje0uAwfw36RxcQamZ-1tKVEVN5Qi6tXPemLdZrPlYEG$> and help set the tone at different points in the programme.

Nominations are welcome from all sectors, regions, and career stages. You’re encouraged to submit as many suggestions as you'd like. The deadline is 30 May 2025.

Registration - opening soon!

Mark your calendars - registration for iPRES 2025 opens on 3 June. Take advantage of the early bird rates until 1 September. Whether you are planning to attend in-person or remotely, we can’t wait to welcome you to this year’s conference!

Keep an eye on the website and your inbox - full details will be announced shortly.

You can find the full conference timeline on the Important Dates<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.ipres2025.nz/important-dates__;!!KGKeukY!0wHUIPkanv5a0QFyCeKQ7KwMNuMrwvuaF6vUjBi1JVQFlywMBje0uAwfw36RxcQamZ-1tKVEVN5Qi6tXPemLdQ8dF3ex$> page on the website.

Māori Culture and Tikanga at iPRES 2025

iPRES 2025 is taking place on the land of Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika, who were living in the Wellington Harbour area at the time of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Taranaki Whānui descend from one or more of the recognised tūpuna (ancestors) of Te Ati Awa, Taranaki, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Mutunga and other iwi (tribes) from the Taranaki area.

As memory institutions we acknowledge the importance of Taranaki Whānui as Mana Whenua - those who currently hold, protect and keep alive the memories of this rohe (area). We commit to doing this by ensuring that tikanga (customs) and kawa (protocols) of Te Ao Māori (the Māori world view) are upheld and embedded throughout the event.

Te Ao Māori emphasises the importance of relationships between nature (te taiao), the land (whenua), waterways (wai) and people (tangata). It is a holistic worldview that focuses on interconnections. A key element of Te Ao Māori is the importance of whakapapa, the genealogical links that weave individuals into their ancestral lineages and people to te taiao. Community (hapori) is at the heart of Te Ao Māori. Values like manaakitanga (hospitality, generosity, respect) and whanaungatanga (kinship, connection) emphasise the importance of nurturing relationships and supporting one another. Care for the natural environment is another key element of Te Ao Māori.

As part of holding iPRES 2025 in Aotearoa New Zealand, the Local Organising Committee is embedding Mātauranga Māori (traditional Māori knowledge) and tikanga (customary practices) throughout the conference experience. These include features such as karakia (blessings) and waiata (song). A pōwhiri, or formal ceremonial welcome to guests, will be held at the start of the Monday workshop day.

Māori tikanga may be different from the cultural practices iPRES attendees are accustomed to. We look forward to sharing this unique experience with you as hosts. As guests, we ask you to come with an open heart and respect for Aotearoa’s indigenous culture.

We will provide more detail about our tikanga practices at iPRES 2025 and what attendees can expect over the coming months.

Looking for a friendly face at iPRES? Join our mentoring program!

Whether you're new to iPRES or a seasoned attendee, our mentoring programme is a great way to connect, share expertise, exchange ideas and build new networks across the digital preservation community.

Open to all attendees, the program is designed to be lightweight and flexible — we simply ask mentors and mentees to meet at least once during the conference (over a coffee break or lunch is perfect!). We also encourage everyone to reach out before the conference starts.

Mentors will help by connecting before and during the conference, offering a warm welcome, introductions to other attendees, and career advice if requested. Mentees, you'll be expected to stay engaged, reaching out if needed, and making the most of the opportunity to learn and grow.

And of course, everyone is expected to respect confidentiality and uphold our Code of Conduct<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.ipres2025.nz/code-of-conduct__;!!KGKeukY!0wHUIPkanv5a0QFyCeKQ7KwMNuMrwvuaF6vUjBi1JVQFlywMBje0uAwfw36RxcQamZ-1tKVEVN5Qi6tXPemLdX8xoS38$> throughout to keep our interactions professional and supportive.

Interested? Just complete the mentoring section when you register! The Attendee Experience team will match mentors and mentees thoughtfully, based on your expertise and preferences. We’ll also send out helpful conversation starters to get you going.
