Topic: Tech Tools for Transcription
Join us as we learn about emerging technology tools and services for transcription work. Presenters will cover a variety of methods being used by their institutions, sharing what is working best, lessons learned, and more. Presentations will cover both text and audio transcription and include Transkribus, Generative AI tools, Open AI's Whisper, vendor services, and crowd-sourcing projects. (Zoom connection info will be shared with registered attendees.)

Presentations: INFO FROM SPEAKER FORM
- Introducing hOCRedit: A New Tool for Transcribing Handwritten Text. Joe Corall, repository architect, Library Technology, Lehigh University. Lehigh Libraries developed an Islandora microservice that uses Generative AI to automatically transcribe and index handwritten manuscript documents in our digital repository. With support from a Lyrasis Catalyst Fund grant, we're now extending this work to generate hOCR output, and provide this functionality as an open-source tool.
- Evolution of FamilySearch Indexing. Jeremy Christiansen, product manager, Get Involved Volunteering, FamilySearch, will discuss indexing over the last decade as it has evolved to present day, utilizing modern tech to scale the effort of making records searchable.
- Comparative Study of Audio Transcription by Paid Vendors and Open-Source AI. Sarah Hartzell, audiovisual preservation & digitization specialist, Ohio State University Libraries. Using the Jessica Mitford cassette digitization project as a test group, we tested two paid vendors and Open AI's Whisper for audio transcription, analyzing their accuracy, overall cost, and impact on staff time, with the goal of developing a feasible transcription strategy at scale.
- AI and Transcription: Transkribus and Handwritten Documents. Chris Lott, Digitization and Data coordinator, UGA Special Collections Libraries, University of Georgia, will provide a brief overview of Transkribus, a web-based app for transcribing handwritten documents, and discuss using it on the "Finding Their Names: Discovery and Description of Enslavement Events" grant. He'll reflect on what it's like to use the software, and talk through some logistical and ethical questions with using LLMs for this kind of work.

- Programming contacts: Grace Freeman, Columbus Metropolitan Library (gfreeman at columbuslibrary.org<mailto:gfreeman at columbuslibrary.org>) & Adam Wanter, MidPointe Library System (awanter at midpointelibrary.org<mailto:awanter at midpointelibrary.org>)
