Join two of the authors of the Society of American Archivists’ Selecting and Appraising Archives and Manuscripts to learn the tactics, techniques and tradecraft of intentional archival collecting. Archivists are often well-equipped to police boundaries in collecting; what if we prized hospitality and accompaniment? Do our acquisitions and appraisal habits align with our missions? What makes a site visit work? How can negotiations with a donor spare the labor of future archivists? Instructor Bios:

Maureen Cresci Callahan is the director of archives and special collections at the University of Connecticut. She previously worked as the curator of the Sophia Smith Collection of Women’s History at Smith College and in archival technologies and technical services at Yale University, New York University, and Princeton University. She was co-chair of the Technical Subcommittee on Describing Archives: A Content Standard during the process of revising the principles of archival description from 2014 to 2019 and a member of the leadership group of the National Best Practices for Archival Accessioning Working Group from 2021 to 2024. She holds degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Bryn Mawr College.

David Staniunas has been an archivist at the Presbyterian Historical Society since 2011. He grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, and has master’s degrees from Indiana University Bloomington and Kent State University. His most recent writing has been on archival misprision of Assyrians and on the history of economic and political boycott in American archives.
