[SOA] Volunteer Opportunity: Ohio History Day State Contest

Hello, Ohio Archivists!

As you may know, the Society of Ohio Archivists has been a longtime supporter of the Ohio History Day program through Special Award sponsorship, volunteering at History Day Contests as judges, and more. As we start off the new year and look to the upcoming Ohio History Day Contest season, we would love to invite you to volunteer as a judge at any of our 10 Regional Contests around the state from February through March and/or at our State Contest this April.


Ohio History Day<https://www.ohiohistory.org/education/ohio-history-day/>, an affiliate of National History Day<https://nhd.org/en/>, gives students in grades 6-12 the chance to become historians. Based on their own research and aligned to an annual theme<https://www.ohiohistory.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/26_OHD_ThemePacket_ArchiveInfo.pdf>, students create projects and present their findings at competitions. Ohio History Day is a wonderful opportunity for students to engage deeply with historical research and presentation.



We believe that the expertise and experience of yourself & your colleagues would be invaluable to the students, and your participation would greatly enhance the quality of the contests. Judging for most contests will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., and we will provide all necessary materials and guidelines in advance. We kindly ask that you share this invitation with any peers who might be interested in joining us as judges. Attached is a PDF flier that can be shared physically, and below you'll find directions to sign up directly. Judging is also open to college students, so please feel free to pass this opportunity along to any college folks you may know.



Sign Up to Judge

To sign up to judge, follow these easy steps:

  1.
Click the "Become a Judge!" button below.
  2.
Determine which Contest(s) you'd like to judge at and click "Sign Up."
  3.  Create a new account, answer a few questions, and specify a category preference. If you have no category preference, no problem! We'll find a category that needs your help.



We’ll provide all the training and materials needed, but you can take a look at judging resources on our Judge Page<https://www.ohiohistory.org/education/ohio-history-day/judges/>. You’ll also receive additional details about the schedule, judging process, and parking closer to the contest date.
