Collection Development: Evaluating Turnover Rates

9/22/2003

1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
MOLO Regional Library System Training Center, New Philadelphia, OH

Scheduled Speaker: Beth Farrell, Portage County District Library and
Karen Sykeny, Massillon Public Library

Registration is limited to 40

Collection development poses challenges like limited budgets, limited
staff, and time constraints. When most people think about collection
development, selection of library materials, acquisitions, donations,
weeding, preservation, and protecting intellectual freedom are likely to
be the kinds of activities that come to mind. But evaluating the
collection is equally important and library staff can benefit by having
a better understanding of holdings by charting the collection. Beth will
share some valuable techniques for evaluating fiction, non-fiction,
children's materials and audio visual materials. Following her
presentation, Karen Sykeny, Young Adult Librarian at Massillon Public
Library, will share how she used this model to monitor turnover the rate
and how keeping monthly and yearly statistics for circulation and
program attendance provided her with useful strategies. She also will
explain how the figures helped with yearly reports, as well as asking
for monetary support and funding for materials and programs, especially
in tight budget times. Karen also will explain how monitoring usage
helps with weeding and ordering, (i.e. knowing month-to-month what is
"hot" or not) for her YA department.
