We had a sick leave donation policy at Norwalk for many years. It was
originally set up because a staff member needed surgery and did not have
enough sick leave to cover her absence. The Board of Trustees allowed the
employees to donate sick leave to her. Over the years, the donation policy
was used several times whenever an employee had a catastrophic event
(illness, family crisis, death in family, etc.). A few years ago, it was
discovered that a member of management was donating large amounts of sick
leave to an employee who had not suffered a catastrophic event in her life.
Rather, she had chronic absenteeism. The employees asked the Board of
Trustees to put limitations on the sick leave donation policy so this type
of abuse would not happen again. Instead, they decided to discontinue the
policy. My suggestion to you would be, if you establish a sick leave
donation policy, put some type of restrictions on it so this type of thing
doesn't happen. It will make everyone's life much easier and not cause hard
feelings among your staff.

Just my two cents. Happy holidays to all.
