St. Marys Community Public Library will sponsor its annual Mock Caldecott
Election with facilitator Floyd Dickman, on January 3, 2004. With registration
beginning at 8:15, the work session will run from 9:00 a.m. till 12:00 noon. It will be
held in the meeting room of the library at 140 S. Chestnut, St. Marys, Ohio.
Mr. Dickman will bring with him 60 to 70 new picture books in a wide range of
topics and formats that, in his opinion, might be contenders for the medal. Participants
will scan the books and try to think as the Caldecott panelists will think when making
their choices.
The only person ever to serve on the Caldecott Awards committee for three
terms, Floyd is well known across the state of Ohio as the former Coordinator of the
Ohio Center for the Book as well as the Coordinator of Library Programs and
Development for the State of Ohio. He is now a consultant and adjunct professor for
the Kent State School of Library and Information Science.
Although fee based ($11 includes materials and continental breakfast), the
workshop is open to the public. CEU's for both public and preschools will be available
at no extra charge.
