I'm working with AccessScience and Oxford Reference Online to get their remote access working as well. If you have your own patron authentication system, you can set up remote access directly from your website to your NewsBank account. Our contact at Newsbank is Maureen McAveeney, mmcaveeney@newsbank.com, 800-243-7694. We are still struggling with the issue of appropriately counting statistics for remote access, but it didn't seem worth further delays. I will continue trying to correct this problem, but be advised that when your patrons access NewsBank remotely through the OPLIN website, those usage stats will not be reported to you. If you have any questions, please contact the OPLIN Support Center, support@oplin.org, 888-966-7526. Many of the faculty who have made these medical centers exceptional also contribute their expertise to NetWellness by answering questions in Ask an Expert. The links above list those faculty who generously volunteer their time and expertise to answer questions posed by NetWellness visitors. Search Engine Update We recently updated the NetWellness search engine to make it easier for you to find the information you need on our site. Search results now display NetWellness articles and Ask an Expert responses, ADAM encyclopedia articles, and external web links separately and display the top 5 results for each area. We hope this will provide you more accurate results that are easier to view. Check it out and let us know how we can make it better. Let Us Know How We're Doing We are always trying to improve to meet your needs. What do we do well? What can we do to better fit your needs? Want 1700 new titles? Short on shelf space? Add ListenOhio to your library. ListenOhio - the world's first shared collection of digital audiobooks, previously only available to members of NOLA, is now available to libraries across the state. ListenOhio currently owns more than 1700 popular digital audiobook titles in MP3 format, which may be downloaded by any of the participating libraries. While all titles are stored in MP3 format, the content is copyright protected using a patented encryption technology from our content provider, Audible.com, the Internet's largest, most diverse provider of premium spoken audio services. We've been very pleased with Audible's flexibility and their willingness to work with our group to develop an effective Digital Rights Management System that mimics the traditional library circulation model. How things work: Patrons can check availability and select titles from a central web catalog located at http://www.listenohio.org. Library staff then download the titles and load them onto a portable MP3 player which the patron then "checks-out" from the library. The portable players used by ListenOhio libraries are about the size of single cassette tape and hold 17 hours of digital audiobook content - which permits libraries to load multiple titles on a single device. No tapes or disks to lose. Perfect for your patrons on the go! Interested? ------=_NextPart_000_0013_01C3A866.77915690-- From yarmando@oplin.org Wed Nov 12 15:17:56 2003 From: yarmando@oplin.org (Don Yarman) Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2003 10:17:56 -0500 Subject: [OPLINLIST] EBSCOhost announces additions to Academic Search Premier Message-ID: EBSCOhost announces additions to Academic Search Premier As of today, Academic Search Premier (ASP) contains 3,970 full text journals. As of January 1, 2004, ASP's product definition will jump to 4,406 full text serials, representing an 11% increase in the number full text journals offered through the database. In addition, EBSCO recently acquired Whitston Publishing, the publisher of the secondary database: American Humanities Index (AHI). This abstract/index database is a valuable source of indexing for humanities journals and has very little overlap with Academic Search Premier. For all of 2004, all current subscribers of Academic Search Premier (including Ohio's public libraries) will receive American Humanities Index (AHI) at no additional charge. Further, for all of 2004, all current subscribers of Academic Search Premier will receive an additional new database, Communication & Mass Media Complete (CMMC), at no additional charge for one year. (EBSCO has not yet sent us incremental pricing for keeping CMMC among OPLIN's resources after 2004). Details from EBSCO's announcement are below. Regards, Don Yarman OPLIN Library Services Manager yarmando@oplin.org ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: CMMC will contain the entire Communication & Mass Media Index (CMMI), plus the world's best collection of full text communication and mass media journals. CMMI is the definitive index of literature for these disciplines and includes the following: 1.) All detailed bibliographic records from CommSearch, formerly produced by the National Communication Association 2.) All detailed bibliographic records from Mass Media Articles Index, formerly produced by Penn State University 3.) Indexing, abstracts and detailed bibliographic records for all major communication and/or mass media journals that were not previously covered by CommSearch or Mass Media Articles Index 4.) Vastly expanded backfiles of indexing, indicative abstracts and detailed bibliographic records for major communication journals 5.) Extended informative abstracts for numerous top journals indexed in the database from January 1, 2004 forward 6.) Searchable citations (A.K.A. linked cited references) beginning on January 1, 2003 for all peer-reviewed journals covered as "core" in the database [NOTE: EBSCO is processing backfiles of searchable citations for some of the journals in CMMC.] 7.) Strong coverage of grey literature, including monographs, conference proceedings, working papers, etc. In total, more than 285 journals will be indexed and abstracted as "core" in CMMI, while approximately 100 journals will be indexed as "priority" titles. "Core" coverage refers to sources which will be indexed and abstracted in their entirety (i.e. cover to cover), while "priority" coverage refers to sources from which we will include only those articles which are relevant to the field. Priority sources often contain a substantial amount of quality content relevant to the subjects, but also contain a number of articles covering topics not related to the field of study. We will also be adding, in the future, "selective" coverage of a large number of quality publications which occasionally contain papers related to the discipline. Only those articles that relate to communication and mass media will be selected for the database. In addition to containing everything in CMMI, CMMC will also contain full text for more than 160 communication and mass media journals, including most of the top journals in the field. This database will be the main source of communications full text available via EBSCOhost. Historically, this has been the area of greatest weakness for EBSCO databases and now it will clearly be a strength. CMMC will include PDFs, back to the first published issue for many journals that were never before available as full text in any version of Academic Search, including: Communication Education Communication Monographs Critical Studies in Media Communication International Journal of Corpus Linguistics Journal of Applied Communication Research Journal of the Association for Communication Administration Philosophy & Rhetoric Quarterly Journal of Speech Sign Language & Linguistics Text & Performance Quarterly In addition, CMMC will eventually contain full text for dozens of monographs; for example: Between Communication & Information Language & Communication in Israel Media Literacy Around the World Mediation, Information, & Communication Here is how this new product, along with a very successful licensing campaign for journals in other disciplines, will affect the specific database definitions for both versions of Academic Search: Academic Search Premier (ASP) * 532 full text journals added * 96 full text journals moved to CMMC * Net gain of 436 full text journals Academic Search Elite (ASE) * 258 full text journals added * 55 full text journals moved to CMMC * Net gain of 203 full text journals The list of soon to be added full text titles is dominated by high quality peer reviewed journals covering many disciplines. Complete lists of these publications, with coverage dates, will be available within the next several weeks. In summary, the number of full text journals in each version of Academic Search will be growing by 11% (in a single month), and customers of Academic Search will also receive two new high-quality subject-specific databases free of charge (for an entire year). Interested? OLC Conf. Presentations Message-ID: To: Ohio Library Council Annual Conference Attendees From: Terry Casey How do Ohioans rate their public libraries and what do they want for the future? We just completed 704 in-depth interviews on November 10 with people all over Ohio, including data broken out by all regions of the state and different size communities. Thursday and Friday at the Ohio Library Council Conference in Cleveland, it will be time for those magical words from TV . . . Survey Says! Here are a few, quick highlights from the 39 different questions and ten demographic factors that have been compiled and analyzed: Loving and Using Libraries: 37% rate libraries excellent and 86% say excellent or good. Only 1.6% said poor. These high ratings are significantly better than achieved for other Ohio services, especially compared to the legislature. 25% visit library three or more times every month. 56% visit monthly or more. Technology: It is huge and growing, especially with certain key audience segments. 64% of Ohioans have used the Internet in the past six months. Of those Ohioans using the Internet, 62% go there daily or more. There is detailed information on use and by whom for DVDs, high-speed web access, library websites, what they do on the web, etc. Marketing & Retailing Trends for Libraries: Do Ohioans want their libraries to adapt from the best in retailing and what would that mean for improved service and the look of your facilities? How are local library levies and taxes viewed/potential, what services should be added, future audiences targeted, etc.? We will have answers for all of this and much, much more. There will be two presentations of SURVEY SAYS! at the OLC Conference at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel: Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, 4:15-5:15 pm Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, 2:00-3:00 pm If in Cleveland Thursday or Friday, hopefully you and/or a key staff member or Trustee can attend, see the results and offer your comments/reactions to its meaning for long-range planning during these challenging times. If you are interested in a customer satisfaction survey in your area and/or more on this new Ohio data, please let me know via e-mail or call at 614/261-6825. THANKS!
