University of Nebraska at Omaha

The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) seeks an energetic, resourceful,
and visionary individual to lead the University Library and its talented and
committed staff. The successful candidate for Dean of Library Services will
formulate and articulate a vision of state-of-the art academic library
services; develop, communicate, and generate support for strategies to
achieve that vision; and demonstrate a collaborative, inclusive management
style and capacity to work collegially and effectively with the academic
community to achieve shared goals. 

The Dean of Library Services exercises overall leadership, administrative,
and development responsibility for all operations of the University Library.
The dean is actively engaged in community outreach and collaboration,
strategic planning, and fund-raising. The dean also provides leadership and
oversight of the library faculty's reappointment, promotion, and tenure
process. The dean reports to the vice chancellor for academic and student
affairs and is a member of the Chancellor's Council and Deans Forum.

The library's physical collection includes over 750,000 volumes, more than
3,000 periodical subscriptions, 450,000 government documents, and nearly
2,000,000 microforms. The library provides electronic access to over 22,000
full-text journals, more than 10,000 monographs, and numerous other
resources. University Library is staffed by a team of 13 faculty, 8
managerial/professional staff, 28 support staff, and many student
assistants. The library's 2004-05 budget is approx. $4.9M. The current
library facility, completed in 1976, contains 147,000 sq. ft. A major
building expansion will add 31,000 sq. ft. and is expected to commence in
2005. The library is extensively involved in applications of technology
designed to enhance user access to resources, provide innovative programs,
and support information literacy.  

UNO is one of four campuses of the University of Nebraska. The other
campuses include the University of Nebraska Medical Center (also located in
Omaha), University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the University of Nebraska at
Kearney. UNO is Nebraska's metropolitan university and has a strong
commitment, articulated in its strategic plan, to placing students first,
achieving academic excellence, and engaging with the community. The
university is situated on 88.5 acres in the heart of Omaha and is surrounded
by beautiful parks and residential neighborhoods; the nearby south campus,
home of the Peter Kiewit Institute of Information Science, Technology, and

The position requires the MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program.
Preferred qualifications include: 
-Second master's degree and/or doctoral degree; 
-Substantial administrative experience in an academic library with
increasing levels of management and leadership responsibility; 
-A creative vision of future library services and resources in the academic
community; 
-Demonstrated leadership in applications of computer and networking
technologies for innovative library services; 
-Creative leadership in integrating information competencies and learning
resources into the curriculum; 
-A collegial leadership style, strong commitment to public service,
demonstrated problem-solving skills, and effective interpersonal and
communication skills.
