Online Research Worries Many Educators (When students do research online
these days, many educators worry, those are often about the only steps they
take. If they can avoid a trip to the library at all, many students gladly
will. Young people may know that just because information is plentiful
online doesn't mean it's reliable, yet their perceptions of what's
trustworthy frequently differ from their elders' -- sparking a larger debate
about what constitutes truth in the Internet age.)

Libraries Reach Out, Online (Libraries are offering: 1) Hundreds of e-books
online; 2) will soon be offering movies online; 3) The Sacramento library
system has drummed up interest by holding several after-hours video game
parties in which teenagers gather to play networked games like Star Wars
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. Always on the lookout for the kernel of
learning to be found in the fun, the librarians have matched the game play
with reading material. "Teen boys, in addition to being voracious consumers
of video games, are also huge fans of science fiction, so the connection
seemed very natural."; 4) One of the most effective uses of technology to
entice visitors is turning the building into a wireless hot spot. For less
than $1,000, a library can set up a wireless network and draw the public in
for free-range Internet access. The Wireless Librarian
(people.morrisville.edu/~drewwe/wireless) lists more than 400 such library
hot spots in the United States.)

Into the Stacks, Tablets in Hand (The Salem-South Lyon District Library,
Mich. public library reference staff is using tablet PCs linked to their
wireless network to leave the reference desk to wander the building and
offer help to customers, sometimes even before they are asked. With the
newfound ability to wirelessly tap into the library's resources and book
catalog, the librarians can accompany visitors as they search through the
stacks, looking for books and articles, requesting materials from other
libraries and printing out information along the way. Librarians there say
the portable computers have been a success, particularly in dealing with
customers with medical problems. People will come in with a diagnosis, and
if it's serious, they're in shock and might not remember what their doctor
said. The librarian is able to walk a customer through the research process,
giving a form of personal assistance that can be more easily provided in the
relative privacy of the stacks.)
