Worthington Libraries is one of the service providers for the statewide
chat-based reference service, Know it Now. Recently, we assisted a
patron in a session that we think is worth sharing. While it's
admittedly less eloquent than Francis P. Church's editorial "Yes,
Virginia, There is a Santa Claus" (this is, after all, chat we're
talking about) it pulls at the same heartstrings.

Consider it "Yes, Virginia..." for the new century.

The text of the Know It Now Transcript follows. Virginia is an alias,
not the actual name of the patron.

Dear "Virginia",

Included below is a transcript of your session with the librarian. The
Web pages or documents sent to you during the session are listed below
as hyperlinks. Just click on them to see them again. If you need more
information, please log in again. Thank you for using our service. We
hope to see you again soon!

                                                        =20

Librarian16: Virginia, welcome to the KnowItNow service.

allows you to search for images. Have you used it before?

Librarian16: I can show you how if you like?

"Virginia": yes but it doesnt work for me. our computer is messed up

Librarian16: OK. I bring it up and do a search.

Librarian16:  [I have sent you: - Google] http://www.google.com/

Librarian16: Do you see Google now?

"Virginia":  pictures of cats please

"Virginia":  yes

Librarian16: OK. Click on the word that says Images

"Virginia":  yes thank you

Librarian16: You're welcome, did you need anything else?

"Virginia":  yes

Librarian16: What else did you need?

"Virginia": Has anyone ever seen santa live in there house at night or
see reindeer fly?

Librarian16: Let me check on that.

Librarian16: Virginia, Clement Clarke Moore wrote a poem about seeing
Santa Claus visit his house. In the poem he describes Santa and says he
saw the reindeer fly. I'll send you the poem.

Librarian16: [I have sent you: - Christmas poems and stories - twas the

Librarian16: If you believe Mr. Moore, the reindeer flew right up on
his roof.

"Virginia":  so is Rudolf Real!!!

"Virginia":  so rudolph is real!!!!

Librarian16: I've never seen Rudolph, so I can't say for sure. Plenty
of people have written stories about him so it's hard to say.

"Virginia": Do you believe in Santa?

Librarian16: I get presents every year. The tag says they're from Santa
C.

Librarian16: That's good enough for me. How about you?

"Virginia":  i guess
