=93New Librarians, New Leaders: Educating the Next Generation of School Library
Media Specialists and Young Adult Librarians=94

Project Directors: Dr. Greg Byerly and Dr. Carolyn S. Brodie

The Kent State School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) has been
awarded $392,243 in federal funding to provide one-time academic scholarships
to sixteen students who plan on becoming either young adult librarians in a
public library or school library media specialists in a K-12 school. Funding
has been provided through the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
as part of the "2003 IMLS Recruiting and Educating Librarians for the 21st
Century."

Students selected for this program will receive full tuition for all courses
to complete a Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS). Scholarships
are for students who plan to begin the program in Fall 2004. They will be
required to take 2 or 3 courses per semester through Fall 2006. Students will
graduate in December 2006.

Eight scholarships will be offered to students interested in becoming young
adult librarians and eight will be given to students seeking to become
licensed school library media specialists. Students must demonstrate a strong
commitment to youth services and pledge to work in either a public library or
a K-12 school after graduating from the program. Project partners include the
State Library of Ohio, INFOhio, Ohio Library Council, and the Ohio Educational
Library Media Association.

A new two-year cycle of the 12-12-12 Distance Education video conference
program will begin starting in fall 2004 to meet the needs of scholarship
students. Courses will be offered over a two-year period in five locations:
Kent, Columbus, Franklin, Lorain, and Mansfield. Students can fully
participate in this program through the School's 12-12-12 Distance Degree
program.

Scholarship students will also have their personal dues paid for membership in
ALA, OLC, and OELMA and will be required to attend various conferences
(expenses paid) during the two years of the program.
