Building on a five-year tradition of heightening the awareness of
the Ohio library community to the changing nature of the people and
communities they serve, the Ohio Library Council will host the 2004 =
Diversity
Conference on August 17 and 18. The conference will be held at the =
Embassy Suites
Hotel in Dublin and will feature such outstanding speakers as Jose =
Aponte,
Director of the Pikes Peak (CO) Library District; Tracie Hall, Director,
ALA Office for Diversity and the Spectrum Initiative; and Raymond =
Santiago,=20
Director of the Miami-Dade (FL) Public Library. The Conference is =
co-sponsored by
OLC's Diversity Awareness and Resources Committee, OHIONET, and OCLC, =
and
generously underwritten by grants from the Ohio Library Foundation and =
LSTA
funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, awarded by the
State Library of Ohio. Registration is available at
http://www.olc.org/WorkshopDescription.asp?ID=3D264.

On the evening of August 17, the annual Ohio Dinners for
Spectrum will be held in the atrium of OCLC's Kilgour Building, across =
the
street from the Embassy Suites Hotel. OCLC will underwrite all
costs of the dinner, so that every ticket sold is a contribution to the
Spectrum Scholarship Initiative of the American Library Association. =
The
featured speaker will be Mart=EDn Gom=E9z, the incoming President of the =
Urban
Libraries Council and a member of the OCLC Board of Trustees. =
Immediately
following dinner and Mr. Gom=E9z's remarks, there will be a screening of =
the
film "Flag Wars" about culture clash in a Columbus neighborhood affected =
by gentrification.
This film, which premiered on the PBS series POV, is a powerful
documentary that has sparked considerable debate about urban change.
Registration for the Spectrum Dinner is separate from conference =
registration and is
available at http://www.oclc.org/news/announcements/announcement101.htm.

The OLC Diversity Conference has a national reputation for the quality =
of
its educational program and the breadth of its approach. Please attend =
and
bring your managers, your staff, your trustees, and anyone else who is
interested in making library services broadly accessible.
