FUNCTIONAL REQUIRMENTS FOR BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORDS
(FRBR): challenge, opportunity, or...
a program by
DR. MAJA ZUMER
Monday, April 12, 2004, 5:30-8:00 p.m. at Cleveland State University Library

FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) is a 1998
recommendation of the International Federation of Library Associations and
Institutions (IFLA) to restructure catalog databases to reflect the
conceptual structure of information resources. Many of us have only heard
about it and know the big impact it has, but with no clear idea about its
functions. If fully implemented, FRBR could produce the biggest change
cataloging has seen in the last century. Library of Congress, OCLC, and
major vendors are working to integrate FRBR.

Assistant Professor of Library and Information Science at University of
Ljubljana (Slovenia). She holds a Ph.D. in information science from
University of Zagreb (Croatia), M.L.S. from Kent State University and B.S.
in mathematics from University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). Before she became a
faculty member of LIS at University of Ljubljana, she was first a systems
librarian then (since 1996) head of Research and Development Department at
the National and University Library in Ljubljana.
