MASSILLON PUBLIC LIBRARY                                                     

POSITION: Circulation Assistant - Children’s Services.        

PAY GRADE:  3

WORK SCHEDULE:  Fourteen (14) hours/week.                                          

Wednesday              1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.                                             
Alt. Fri/Sat               9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

During the school year, employee will be required to participate inSunday work rotation at the Main Library; hours 12:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

PAY RATE:  Starting at $7.89/hour.  
Training rate will be 5% less than Regular rate.

TRAINING PERIOD:  Twelve (12) weeks. 

BENEFITS:  
Upon successful completion of training, employee will be allocated paid sick and birthday leave, and be eligible for some paid holidays.  Upon completion of six (6) months regular employment, employee will be allocated paid vacation leave.

QUALIFICATIONS: 
At least one of the following: Associate degree in a directly related field required.  One (1) year of experience in public library or similar work in addition to Associate, a plus.  (OR) One (1) year of post-high school training in a directly related field, with two (2) years of experience in public library or similar work required.  Three (3) years of directly related experience, preferred.  Equivalent experience in a related field with lesser formal education will be considered.  Individual must enjoy working with the public, being around children and working in a lively, creative atmosphere.

ALSO REQUIRED: Valid driver’s license.  Good driving record.  (Driving record check will   be conducted.) Personal vehicle for when employee has to attend a seminar or meeting and library vehicle is not available.  Proof of liability insurance.  Working telephone.  Criminal background check is required to be completed for successful candidate.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF--
Significant children’s authors and books.
Online catalogs.
SKILLS--
Oral communication skills sufficient for work with supervisor, other staff, and patrons, especially children.
Good reading and comprehension skills.
Good written communication skills.
Basic computer and word processing skills.
Basic Internet and e-mail skills.
Good visual skills.
General math skills.
ABILITIES--
Consistently present Massillon Public Library and its services in a positive manner.
Follow library’s written general and department-specific standards, and personnel policies.
Meet regular work attendance requirements.
Attend meetings and workshops appropriate to position.
Relate to and meet the special service needs of children and young adults.

Alphabetize and perform basic clerical tasks.

Handle physical aspects of position which include, but are not limited to: standing, moving, sitting, manual dexterity required for computer work, and lifting up to 35 lbs.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Checks materials in/out.  Issues new or replacement library cards.  Collects fees for overdue, lost or damaged materials.  Clears patron records when fees are collected.  Performs computer searches to locate and reserve materials for patrons, including SEO requests.  Notifies patrons when reserved materials are available.  Renews materials for patrons in person or by phone.  Registers patrons for Children’s Department programs.  Provides basic computer instruction to patrons.  Signs up patrons for computer use and monitors the time allotments.  Performs simple computer troubleshooting.  Keeps current on popular children’s literature.  Provides reference and reader’s advisory service to children and adults, including print and non-print sources.  Shares management of overdue notices for the department.  Assists with sorting and packing of library materials received and sent via delivery service.  Assists with opening and closing of department.  Runs cash register.

OTHER DUTIES:
Shelves quick “put-aways.”  Cross-checks new book spine labels with computer records.  Selects and prepares age-appropriate materials for teacher collections.  Weeds collection.  Assists with preparation of materials for juvenile programs.  Assists with book displays.  Attends department and general staff meetings.  Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
