NOLA AWARDED LSTA MINI GRANT FOR LIBRARYLEARNING.ORG.
Warren, Ohio-March 30, 2004-10:00 a.m.-At the March 25 State Library of Ohio
Board meeting in Columbus, NOLA Regional Library System was awarded a LSTA
Mini Grant in the amount of $11,730. to produce and distribute high quality
interactive library training on topics that will have a wide appeal to the
general library community. By using the Internet and various digital video
technologies, this interactive library continuing education will be
available on librarians' desktops for them to use at a time convenient to
them, saving both time and money. The service will be offered not only to
NOLA librarians, but also to any librarian in the state of Ohio.
LibraryLearning.org: Delivering Interactive Training to Your Desktop
The pace of change and development in the field of librarianship has never
been more rapid. Today we commonly face issues like CIPA, patron privacy,
changes in cataloging practices, an upsurge of computer security issues, and
a swell of new reference sources every day. While the pace of change
continues to accelerate, many libraries are being forced to reduce their
investment in employee training due to financial considerations. The
concept of "do more with less" is a reality today in all Ohio libraries. In
these times of economic decline and statewide budget cuts, it becomes
imperative that new ways be found to reduce expenses while continuing to
provide needed high-quality library continuing education. To address this
need, NOLA plans to develop a series of six two-hour self-contained,
internet accessible multimedia learning modules each focusing on one of the
following topics: Reference Services, Technical Services, Youth Services,
Technology, Collection Development, and Administration. These learning
tools will be made available to the Ohio library community at no cost. The
development of these resources will bring new and innovative technology to
the library community along with providing continuing education
opportunities in emerging technologies, information literacy and the use of
information resources.

Other Grant Recipients
The NOLA Regional Library System would also like to congratulate the NOLA
members who received LSTA Mini Grants as well. Grant recipients are as
follows:
Jefferson Area Local Schools, $22,230, to provide information access to the
special needs students in the junior-senior high school. A variety of
special equipment and software will be purchased. The media specialist will
work with special needs students to complete research using INFOhio
electronic resources and to complete a paper using the adaptive technology

Lakeview Local Schools, $21,582, to increase the number of workstations at
the middle school and at the high school. The media specialist will work
