Director of federal museum/library agency discusses 'leadership'

FREMONT - The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center welcome Dr. Robert
Sidney Martin, director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, as
guest speaker for its first annual Hayes Lecture on Leadership Friday, May
14 in the Hayes Museum. The aim of the new lecture series is to examine the
nature of leadership - whether that of a president, businessman, scholar, or
civic figure - and evaluate the characteristics of leadership that result in
progress and success. Croghan Colonial Bank provides sponsorship for Dr.
Martin's appearance.
President George W. Bush nominated Dr. Martin to his post on June 5, 2001. A
unanimous Senate vote five months later confirmed the nomination, making Dr.
Martin the first librarian to head the institute. IMLS is an independent
granting agency designed to encourage a nation of learners. It accomplishes
its goal through financial support of the nation's 15,000 museums and
122,000 libraries and through the creation of partnerships expanding the
educational reach of libraries and museums. IMLS was established in 1996 and
is funded through the Museum and Library Service Act.
Since Dr. Martin assumed the directorship of IMLS, the agency’s budget has
increased from $232,321,000 to $262,240,000. For 2005, an additional
$32,595,000 has been requested - a record-level funding recommendation for
the nation's museums and libraries.
A distinguished library professional and scholar, Dr. Martin commissioned a
2001 study that determined that the nation's museums spend more than $1
billion annually providing 18 million hours of instructional programming for
students in grades K-12. His 2002 survey of museums and libraries found that
88 percent of museums and 99 percent of libraries use technology in their
day-to-day operations. Dr. Martin also led the effort to establish grant
programs for recruitment and education of new librarians and providing
assistance to museums to keep pace with 21st-century challenges. He has been
a leader in forging partnerships between IMLS and public/private entities to
aid in the preservation of cultural heritage and to highlight the importance
of arts and humanities.
The 2004 Hayes Lecture on Leadership provides an opportunity for political,
civic, and business leaders to enjoy the personal insights on leadership
from one of the nation's prominent humanities leaders. The fund-raising
event includes a dinner and lecture for a cost of $50. Reservations are
required. Seating at the lecture is limited to paying guests.
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of
Hayes and Buckland avenues. The facility is affiliated with the Ohio
Historical Society. For more information call 419-332-2081 (in Fremont) or
