As architects of the library catalog, catalogers build bibliographic
structures. Come to these workshops to learn more about the tools that
catalogers use to bring order to chaos. Participants may choose one or both
of the sessions, depending on their interest/skill level; the first session
is not a prerequisite to the second.

PART TWO, ADDING ON:
The second session will focus on the invisible framework of the catalog
provided by authority records and the role of an authority file in providing
access to a bibliographic description. Participants will learn how to use an
authority file to look up names and subjects and review the Library of
Congress guidelines for assigning subject headings.

LEARNER OUTCOMES INCLUDE:
--Understanding the structure of an authority file;
--Searching the Library of Congress authority file to identify name and
subject headings;
--Tagging subject and name headings correctly;
--Interpreting an authority record and identifying the valid and invalid
headings;
--Understanding the guidelines for assigning subject headings to a work

Tuesday June 15, 2004 - From 10:00 AM  to  3:30 PM
