Multicultural Literature and Advising the Reader

http://www.gclc-lib.org/ce/index.html?id=411

      Date:

Wednesday, October 20th, 2004

      Time:

1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

      Location:

Xavier University Library, Training Room

      Speaker:

Paul James, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Xavier University

M. Christine Anderson, Associate Professor of History and Co-Director of
Gender and Diversity Studies, Xavier University

Denis Daly, History Department, Public Library of Cincinnati and
Hamilton County

      Description:

As recently as 10 years ago, most communities in the Greater Cincinnati
area were homogeneous with very little variation in ethnicity or cultural
traditions. Today, our region is experiencing a phenomenal growth in the
number of cultures represented--Hispanic, African American, Eastern
European, Indian, Asian, and many others. Library systems in the area
are seeing a demand for literature and resources to fit the new
community makeup.

This GCLC workshop will discuss some of the elements of multicultural
literature from experts in the field. Topics to be covered include
diversity within literature, African American scholarship, and the
development of the African American Genealogy collection at the Public
Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. The experts will also serve
on a panel and provide an opportunity for questions in the area. The
session give librarians an idea of resources to use to aid in serving
their customers. Workshop participants will be asked to share their own
experiences and work together to come up with innovative solutions.

$15.00 Includes afternoon snack

      Friend of GCLC Cost:
