The Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians (NOTSL) presents our =
Fall 2004 continuing education program:

Subject Headings are considered by many to be a primitive holdover from =
the
era of card catalogs and therefore, not sexy enough for today's =
fast-paced
information retrieval environment. Join us as we cast a new light on a
classic topic and re-examine subject access to library collections.
When we say, "join us," we really mean it. Subject access to library
collections affects all staff in libraries, and we hope to engage all =
staff
in an exchange of views on this topic. Take a look below at the topics
included in this session; if they produce a resonance that intrigues you
and/or compels you to contribute your thoughts, then plan on joining us =
on
Friday, October 29th at the Cuyahoga County Public Library.
Topics:
--Let's start at the very beginning-- exactly how is a subject catalog
supposed to work, anyhow?
--In the Zone, or, assigning subject headings effectively
--Are subject headings still relevant and necessary as an information
retrieval mechanism? Why not use keyword searches instead?
--Subject access to fiction and children's literature-- why bother?
