(18 Oct) Libraries across the country are using RFID technology to track
books and other library  materials. According to the article, the =
technology
is installed in 300 libraries in the U.S. In  addition to tracking items =
on
loan, the technology eventually will enable self-checkout.

It also promises to do away with library classification schemes, such as =
the
Dewey Decimal  System. However, I find this difficult to believe unless =
the
library closes access to its stacks  and depends entirely on online =
systems
for finding items in the collection. It would mean losing  the ability =
to
browse, which remains a useful strategy for both pleasure reading and
