September 10 - Say YES to Teens! A Literary Symposium

Teen literacy has never been more important. Current research on reading
comprehension suggests that U.S. students perform increasingly poorly in
comparison to students from other countries. Libraries can help to close the
gap by promoting reading using new insight, information, and energy. Through
workshop presentations and a panel discussion two well-known teen literacy
specialists will foster understanding of the latest research in adolescent
development as a key to unlocking reading behavior. From Reaching Reluctant
and Underserved Readers by Patrick Jones and Exploding the Myths: Teens and
Reading by Marc Aronson, participants will hear firsthand about research
activities and current resources that support teen literacy. They will also
gain intergenerational sensitivity and acquire competencies to advocate for
teen literacy. This event is primarily funded through an Institute of
Museum and Library Services LSTA grant awarded by the State Library of Ohio.
Workshop fee: $20.00.

September 17 - Securing Your Windows Desktops and Servers

This videoconference - developed by the Ohio Valley Area Libraries (OVAL) -
will feature "best-selling author, popular technology columnist,
commentator, and all-around alpha geek Mark Minasi (who) rocked the crowd at
the tech connections 5 conference... in Columbus during June of this year...
Participant comments included "Bring back Mark Minasi every year!", "Great
content, fast pace" and "Mark Minasi - what can we say, except MORE!".

This FREE videoconference will be held at the Cuyahoga County Public Library
at 2111 Snow Road in Parma - 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. Lunch will be on your own
from 11:30 to 12:30 and morning coffee will be provided (sorry, no
pastries). Register for this workshop at the OVAL Web site:

September 20 - Tween Boys and the Library - Make the Connection

Librarians working with children know that they tend to "lose" boys as they
move through the latter elementary years, but what's a librarian to do?
Program! Michael Sullivan will share with you (and fellow staffers) how you
can make programs more welcoming to boys. You will also learn what factors
effect programs for boys - such as involvement with fathers, choosing the
right collections to support programs, the use of storytelling techniques,
the different learning styles of boys, library rules (and how they can
actually discriminate against boys), and even staff attitudes toward boys
and how attitudes can effect boy patronage. Learn how to make those
pre-adolescent boys - who are nearly invisible in libraries - want the
library (and books) in their lives. This workshop is co-sponsored by CAMLS
and the NOLA Regional Library System.

September 21 - Go FISH! The Importance of Fun, the Power of Culture

Bill Schroer, who, just last spring enthralled an audience with his first
CAMLS presentation - "Customer Service or Customer Servant?" - will be the
featured speaker. He will feature this highly-acclaimed motivational film
and follow up with a review and analysis of the elements of culture that can
make some organizations both successful businesses and fun places to be at
work.
