State Library Extends Deadline to register for the Every Child Ready to Read
Workshop on 10/14/04

The registration deadline for the State Library's workshop has been extended
from September 30, 2004 to October 6, 2004. There are still plenty of spaces
available for this program. To register for the State Library workshop go
to: http://www.slocem.lib.oh.us/ <http://www.slocem.lib.oh.us/>

A goal of all libraries is to help children become readers. There are many
programs or teaching methods that guarantee success in reading, but what
does the scientific research say? What can libraries do to help assure that
our youngest patrons are started on the right path? How can librarians
enlist parents as partners in preparing their children for learning to read?

"Every Child Ready to Read" is a national initiative established by the
Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to
Children, both divisions of the American Library Association. These two
divisions formed a partnership with the National Institute of Child Health
and Human Development (NICHD) who had just released the National Reading
Panel's report, providing research-based findings concerning reading
development in America's children.

This workshop will address tested programs for parents that can be offered
by librarians, and also ways to incorporate these practices into storytime
programs by building in early literacy information.

Even if you are uncertain whether you intend to incorporate these findings
into your library's programs, you should attend this workshop to be aware of
the research and the initiative.

PLEASE NOTE: Checks must be received by October 6th in order to confirm
attendance. We encourage you to attend this valuable program. For more
information or questions contact Ruth Metcalf, Library Development
Consultant, State Library of Ohio, 614-644-6910.
