This is not impartial, but useful.

Cybersitter and NetNanny get the best marks for stand-alone products.
=20
Websense and BESS (N2H2) are the leading server-based products. N2H2 has
been bought by another company which seems to be causing some concern.
=20
We use Websense. It can be pricey, but it meets our needs. The filter is
server-based so staff turns it off from a control panel on a computer at
the public service desk. Generally by the time a patron goes back to the
computer and hits refresh on the browser the computer is unfiltered.
=20
My general concern about stand-alone products is that you have to have a
procedure for keeping the database updated, you can't add a site to a
single white list, and anything you do you have to do multiple times.
=20
Experience tells me that you want a filter that works either by category
or specific URL. Keyword filtering really doesn't work very well and may
turn out to be more trouble than it is worth.
=20
Also remember that this is a top down process. You are filtering to
enforce a Board policy, so be sure that the filter you chose complies
with that policy...not just sex, but chat or instant messaging or
whatever.
=20
I know that this is simplistic, but just for grins take a modified
version of the Dr. Laura or Family friendly Libraries (they have a new
name which escapes me). Do a Google search on your favorite dirty word,
then follow the links until you have violated the Board's policy. You
don't get points for being personally offended by images of naked sheep
on the young adult computer.
=20
The Koha folk from Nelsonville have developed an open source filtering
product that might also be worth checking out.
=20
BTW: This request was for product information not philosophical
discussion. If you want to debate filtering please open a new topic.

=20
Hello,
=20
Would you please give me some information on Internet filters? =20
=20
Do you have a filter that you would recommend (or maybe not recommend)?
(Reason?)
=20
What about ease of use for staff?
=20
Does a staff member turn the filter off for adults?
=20
Accuracy of the filter?
=20
We have 12 stand-alone Internet computers that also have different
word processing programs, educational games, etc. on each computer. The
Library Board is thinking about purchasing a server and installing a
filter just on the server - what are the pros and cons of that?
=20
Additional comments?
=20
Thank you for ANY information you can give me.
