The Board of Trustees and Staff of
Salem Public Library
Cordially invite you to celebrate
The Centennial of Salem Carnegie Library building
At an Open House on
Sunday, August 28, 2005 from 2 - 4 PM

The Salem Public Library was founded in 1895. Ten years later, on =
September 1, 1905, the Salem Carnegie library opened. The Salem Daily =
News reported that 500 persons attended the dedication ceremony. Dr. =
Sylvester F. Scovel, former president of Wooster University and keynote =
speaker, said, =93The library is the symbol and basis of all growth and =
advancement. The library, indicative of the compass of the human mind, =
is a veritable Aladdin=92s cave of gems.=94 Library Board of Trustees =
President F. J. Mullins referred to the library =93as a great storage =
place of ideas; a potent means of intellectual, moral and spiritual =
uplifting.=94

=20

We strive to meet those expectations by providing the best materials, =
innovative services and technologies, and a highly trained staff =
responsive to the changing needs and interests of library patrons. More =
than 13,750,000 items have been borrowed over the past century. We =
believe Mr. Carnegie was keenly aware of his potential impact in the =
world when he wrote, =93I believe a library outranks any other thing a =
community can do to benefit its people. It is the never failing spring =
in the desert.=94

=20

Free public libraries are essential to democracy. Nowhere else is =
information representing all viewpoints on any topic freely available to =
all who seek it. We invite everyone to join us in honoring and =
commemorating Mr. Carnegie=92s rich legacy.
