In fact, it is the fifth leading cause of death among persons between the ages of 25 and 44 in the United States. About 47 million people worldwide have been infected with HIV since the start of the epidemic. An estimated 5 million new HIV infections occurred worldwide during 2002, which equates to about 14,000 new infections each day. Department of the Month - The Center for Injury Research and Policy The Center for Injury Research and Policy is one of ten Centers of Emphasis within Columbus Children's Research Institute at Columbus Children's Hospital. By integrating research, education, advocacy and innovative clinical care, the Center's mission is to reduce death and disability caused by injury. While great strides in injury prevention have been made, injury remains the leading cause of death for persons ages 1 to 44 in the United States. Injuries account for one third of all "years of potential life lost," or YPLL, an indicator used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to measure premature mortality. Injuries account for more YPLL than heart disease, cancer and stroke combined, which are the next leading causes of YPLL nationally. Children are the most vulnerable to injury and suffer the greatest long-term effects. Based on scientific principles, the Center conducts research activities to address prevention, acute care and biomechanics related to injury. Current projects include research on sports-related injury, injuries to individuals with disabilities, smoke alarms to awaken children, and pediatric impact biomechanics, as well as a collaborative effort with several state agencies to implement a CODES (Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System) program in Ohio through which policies for highway safety planning can be developed. NetWellness experts Gary A. Smith, MD, DrPH, Director, and Kelly J. Kelleher, MD, MPH, Investigator, are faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University. In case you haven't, here is what a few of your colleagues have said about it so far: "I love, love, love the new NoveList interface! It's very easy to navigate. My favorite readers' advisory tool just got even better! Thank you!" (Tulsa City-County Library, OK) "Excellent improvements-- easier to find anything. I really like the series features, the easy access to booklists, and the thorough author read-alikes. Well done! I'll be using it a lot more." (Forest Grove City Library, OR) "LOVE the new look and all the great features!! A young patron asked for the cul-de-sac kids series and it was SO easy to find. Thank you!" (Lake County Library, IN) "I love the new NoveList! Everything is so clean and well organized and best of all, easy to use. It just keeps getting better and better!" (Johnson County Library, KS) So take a look! We suggest that you quickly click on each tab just to see what's where and we invite you to look at and print out the one-page aids on the new version, available at the NoveList Notes link at the "Readers' Advisory" tab. For more on these aids, see the end of this note. "Which Titles in This List Are the Best Ones?" When our customers (staff and patrons alike) use NoveList to search the database, many of them are overwhelmed by very long lists of search results, especially if the search is rather broad (for example, a Describe a Plot search for "science fiction"). One of the new enhancements available in this version of NoveList (and NoveList K-8) is the ability to sort any of your search results by popularity. This is a powerful sort, so we want to make sure that you understand what it does. Titles in NoveList (and NoveList K-8) are now assigned a popularity rating of 1 to 4 stars if they have met certain criteria in number of purchases by libraries and bookstores across the nation. The popularity rating is based on data provided by Baker & Taylor. Try this search as an example (note this is an adult search and will not work in NoveList K-8, but the next search example will): 1. Access NoveList and click on the "Search Our Database" tab. 2. Select the "Describe a Plot" link. 3. Enter "chick lit" in the Find box. You can also click "Adult" for level in the Limiters box. Then click SEARCH. (Note: make sure "chick lit" is two words.) 4. NoveList returns a list of over 80 titles. Which ones are the best? That decision is ultimately up to each reader and her tastes, but sorting by popularity will provide information on what many across the nation thought were the best titles. 5. Using the "Sort by" drop-down menu in the upper middle part of the screen, choose "Popularity." The Chick Lit list is resorted by popularity. The first 25 or so of the titles have four stars, indicating tremendous popularity across libraries and bookstores. Important Note: All four-star rated titles are not equally popular. When you sort a list by Popularity, titles displaying the same number of stars are ranked accordingly within that list. For example, the first title listed with four stars sold more copies across the nation than the second title in the list also with four stars. Another Search Example: 1. Access NoveList or NoveList K-8 and click on the "Search Our Database" tab. 2. Select the "Describe a Plot" link. 3. Enter "coming of age" in the Find box. Also click "children's" and "young adult" to limit by level in the Limiters box. Then click SEARCH. 4. This search returns a large number of hits (over 900) and the immediate question is "Which ones are the best?" 5. Using the "Sort by" drop-down menu in the upper middle part of the screen, choose "Popularity." The list is resorted, bringing the most popular "coming of age" titles to the top of the list. NoveList's new popularity sorting feature gives you a way to guide your readers to the most widely read books in any genre or on any topic as well as a way to narrow an extremely long result list. One-Page Aids to Help You Communicate the New Version of NoveList We have put together a couple of one-page aids that might be useful to you with your staff and (especially with regard to the "Quick Start - Using Tabs in NoveList") for your patrons. These two documents are available in NoveList by going to "Readers' Advisory" tab and clicking on the NoveList Notes link. § "What's New in NoveList" is a one-page stand-alone piece that you can print out or send to your staff. It highlights the enhancements of the new version. § "Quick Start - Using Tabs in NoveList" is also designed to be a stand-alone one-page document that you can print out and distribute to your patrons and staff to help them use the new tabs. Please note that the NoveList K-8 versions of these documents are available from the NoveList Notes link at the "Teacher Resources" tab in NoveList K-8. Several of you emailed me wanting anything I had obtained. One library bought their scripts from the website http://www.merrimysteries.com/, but would like to write one of their own. Another library has had someone write a history/murder program, and provided helpful information regarding their success. One library suggested it was easier to host the program as a game instead of a play, which was also helpful. In most cases, tickets were sold and an average of 35-45 people attended. Scripts were sometimes hidden in the props, so memorizing wasn't necessary. In some cases, prizes were provided, in other cases only door prizes. Food was provided, and in some cases catered. I want to thank the libraries that contacted me. All the information was helpful. We are considering something from the website recommended to us, but we may try writing something.
