Keynote Address:
Staying Positive Regardless of Life's Road Rage
The most productive employee can very easily become disillusioned with
coping with change and overwhelming responsibilities. Managing to stay
positive in spite of the challenges can be accomplished by practicing eight
keys to a positive attitude and life. This session incorporates traveling
the highway of lifeanalogy for learning eight keys for remaining positive
regardless of the circumstances.
Ed Klee is a trainer and consultant specializing in management practices
and employee development. His academic career has led him through degrees
in Anthropology, to a Masters in Library Science and Masters in Conflict
Resolution. He uses this academic background with his life/work experience
to provide training and consultation in the areas of personal and
managerial development, organizational performance, conflict resolution,
and facilitation of groups. He lives in the great metropolis of Nonesuch,
Kentucky.
Breakout Sessions:
Ohio's Plain People
Elizabeth Burns will outline the history of "plain" Anabaptist (Amish,
Mennonite, and Hutterite) groups in Europe and America, their daily life
and customs today, the women's lives, and how various communities are
changing over time. She will talk about the reasons that some young adults
leave their communities before and after they join the church. Is there a
future for most conservative of the plain people in Ohio?
Scott Savage will discuss perceptions of plain people regarding libraries
and librarians, potential research needs of plain communities and plain
college students (yes, they exist), and how academic libraries might build
relationships with nearby communities.
Elizabeth Burns is the director of Bromfield Library, at Ohio State
University's Mansfield campus, and is co-owner of a 160 acre tree farm
located on the eastern edge of the Ashland-Richland County Old Order Amish
settlement. She and her husband dairy farmed for twenty-three years, then
her husband drove for their Old Order Amish neighbors; cut firewood and
timber for them; and during the summer, delivered block ice to their homes.
Beth home schooled seven of their eleven children. Then at age forty-five
she became a non-traditional college student. During her college years, all
of her papers, including two masters thesis, explored different facets of
the Plain faiths in North America. She wrote about the Hutterites, the
Peace Churches and conscientious objectors, and the Old Order Amish. For
four years, Beth and her husband Richard attended the Woodlawn Mennonite
Church in northern Richland County before deciding not to join that faith.
During this period, the family lived the lifestyle of this very
conservative culture.
Scott Savage is an academic librarian, certified organic farmer, and
Conservative Friend (Quaker). He has published forty articles and two
books on the "plain" life of Amish, Mennonite and Quakers. He journeys
daily between two worlds, teaching research skills to college students at
Ohio State University's Mansfield campus, and homesteading "off the grid"
in a horse and buggy community in southern Ashland County. He and his wife
Mary Ann are founding members in the Conservative Friends Conference, and
have seven children.
How To Be a Showoff: Tips & Tricks for Library Displays
From poster hanging tips to designing display areas, this interactive
session will try and stir your imagination. Sharing will be encouraged so
bring any tips, tricks or "adventure" stories on displays you've done or
plan to do. By the end of the session plan on taking home some new and
creative ideas for doing all sorts of displays both in and out of libraries.
Gaynelle Predmore is a Library Associate 1 at the Curriculum Resource
Center/Jerome Library at Bowling Green State University. She earned a BS in
education from BGSU and an AS of applied science from the University of
Akron/Wayne College. She's been designing displays and exhibits for over 25
years both in and out of libraries. She is involved with both ALAO SSIG and
OLSSI serving in a variety of roles.
True Colors
Come and discover your True Color. Don Lowry founded the True Colors
program in 1978. The mission of the program is to enhance the way we live,
work, communicate and interact with those around us at work and in our
personal lives. The True Colors program asks participants to identify their
color spectrumusing four cards that represent key personality types: Blue,
Gold, Green or Orange. Each color has particular strengths and each
analyzes, conceptualizes, understands, interacts and learns differently. If
these differences are not acknowledged and understood, can become barriers
to interpersonal communication, making understanding between people of
different types difficult.
Kathy Booher is the Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development for OSU
Extension, Ottawa County. She has been in this position for twelve years
with a total of 15 years in Extension. She has a BS in Agriculture from
the Ohio State University and currently is working on her MA. She has
presented several workshops locally and nationally through her involvement
with the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents and the National 4-H
Camping Institute.
