Dr. Carolyn S. Brodie, Professor, Kent State University School of
Library and Information Science (SLIS) was one of three professors to
receive the University's most prestigious award in teaching at a special
luncheon during the "Celebrating College Teaching Conference" held at
KSU on October 21. The Alumni Association's Distinguished Teaching
Award (DTA) was established in 1967 to recognize excellence in the
classroom. The award is presented annually to full-time faculty members
who exhibit extraordinary teaching in the classroom and a devotion to
touching the lives of students. In the past 38 years only a little over
one-hundred KSU professors have received this distinction. The award is
one of the most important honors that can be bestowed upon a Kent State
University faculty member.
Brodie, a native Arkansan, moved to Ohio in 1989 and has devoted her
seventeen-year KSU teaching career to building and creating the SLIS
specializations in children's library materials and services; young
adult library materials and services; and school library media centers.
Today these youth programs are well-known statewide through the school's
12-12-12 Distance Degree Program and are nationally recognized. Dr.
Brodie has additionally been a co-recipient of over four million dollars
in grant funding for KSU-SLIS, primarily working in partnership with
colleague, Dr. Greg Byerly. Just one example of their combined efforts
is the Reinberger Children's Library Center, which was built after they
obtained $240,000 in grant funding. This teaching facility provides a
unique model among the nation's library schools for educating youth
services librarians. Brodie also chaired the 2005 John Newbery
Committee and has been appointed to the 2007 Randolph Caldecott
Committee. And, she co-directs the Virginia Hamilton Conference on
Multicultural Literature for Youth held each April at Kent.
For the Distinguished Teaching Award, Dr. Brodie received a crystal
apple, $1,500 and the satisfaction of being honored for a job well done.
She immediately donated the entire monetary award to the James E. Cook
Memorial Scholarship fund which will provide financial assistance each
year for a student dedicated to working in young adult library
services. Dr. Brodie would like to encourage colleagues statewide to
honor the memory of James Cook and his dedication to young adults and
libraries by making a donation to the first ever SLIS scholarship for
young adult library students. Contributions should be mailed to the:
KSU Development Office, P.O Box 5190, 1061 Fraternity Circle, Kent OH
44242. Please remember to indicate on the memo portion of your check
that your contribution is "In memory of James E. Cook."
Dr. Brodie may be contacted at cbrodie@kent.edu
<mailto:cbrodie@kent.edu> or at Kent State University, School of Library
and Information Science, 314 Library, Kent, OH 44242-0001.
